It appears the fuel tanks (aka "wings") were separated from the possible ignition source (the rest of the plane).

Pinto drivers were not so fortunate.

The deceased just got his commercial ticket and was an employee of Angel Aviation, which is a small flight school out of Glendale.

Not sure what the nature of the flight was, but I can't seem to find the aircraft on Angel's website.
