That's unfortunate.

I think it’s pretty common. Partial BD-5 kits are kind of a dime a dozen (to the point where I’ve seen them given away for free), so a lot get turned into static displays, art projects, heck there’s even a BD-5 weather vane on a pole at Kern Valley airport.

I agree though if it was a COMPLETE kit, it would be a shame to do that to it.

Some folks built BD 5s at MAF, but at 5’ 10, I couldn’t get in one.

A couple guys in my EAA chapter have a BD-5 project they acquired. They are turning it into a go kart for kids to drive at Young Eagles events.

Unfortunately, there's little chance of finishing it so it can fly. The engine woes have never really been solved, which is why so many derelict projects are laying around.

Early on I researched power plant because of the BD5 and saw Jabiru and Wankels in RVs.
Both are reliable, but the Wankel has been noted as the poor mans turbine
