hey all, ive been researching the banner tow regs, and have found an advisory circular on it, but nothing in the FARs. anyone know where this informaiton is? thx!

Their isn't any FAR's per se. However, the only thing I can suggest is part 91 right of way regulations. 113 I think.

what are you looking for?

-you will find some stuff in 91 describing what you can do in restricted category airplanes, it refers to banner towing specifically.

-most of the "regs" for tow ops is in the waiver for that particular company, and there should be a copy in every plane.

Actually you've got the right numbers, but in the wrong order. Its 91.311 that applies. Its a very short reg and tells you everthing you need to know. Mainly that you need a waiver in order to do it. When you obtain said waiver, it will contain everything you need to know in terms of rules regarding operations. Including, in the case of the waiver I towed under anyway, spelling out that you should do the opposite of what is specified in 91.113 when it comes to two aircraft approaching head on in the designated banner lane.

For purposes of clarification it should be added that the company not the pilot holds the waiver. No pilot should fall for the possible scam that they need a waiver (or the attendant "training").

When I was in the game, the company had a waiver that listed specific tail numbers for the planes and listed specific pilots. However, the pilot also got his or her own waiver right from the FSDO guy.

No surprise that each FSDO is different. My experience is with San Jose FSDO.
