Banner Tow Florida

Saw an ad on the orange site a couple days ago looking for pilots to do banner towing in Southern Florida. I sent in my resume and got a call the next day. The guy wanted me to email or fax him copies of my license and medical. He also said that if I already had a banner tow waiver from the FAA to come on down I could start in a week. If I didn't have a waiver then to come on down anyway as he's more than willing to provide training, for a fee. Just head on down, present him with a check on arrival for $2800, he'll train you and you start work straight away. I don't think I've ever hung up a phone that quickly in my life. Seems absolutely ridiculous.

I think I should up my prices for tow endorsements and training (currently FREE)...

For what it is worth, any reputable operator is going to only care about tailwheel time that their insurance wants, or for certain large operators, not even that...

Well that's disappointing...I believe I applied for the same company. No tailwheel needed because they fly 172s I believe. And I'm not signed off for banner tow either. I applied because it said they would train. I didn't know they would charge.

That figures....oh well.

The one I applied to a couple days ago was Florida Aerial Advertising.

Website is....

How else could you get the waiver, just find a place to train you? And do most people not charge for the training?

I'd like to get into it but unsure of how it all works

I don't know enough about it. I just applied because it said THEY train you. I know it is a "low time" type of job so it's a good first flying job. I applied for Aerial Banners which is another company in Florida. The guy called me and told me if I get my tailwheel then he would hire me and train me to "tow". There's also Van Wagner, they advertised on "trade-a-plane.com"

I might follow you for a bit cause I'm looking to do the same thing. Between this or aerial survey that is. I'm looking all over Florida myself, so hopefully it'll work out.

To be honest, I'm looking for ANYTHING, ANYWHERE! Something to build some time. I was unable (financially) to get my cfi. So until I am able to afford it, the options are limited. But there are some jobs out there. Just have to look hard enough and be willing to relocate or commute for most jobs.

You and me both! I'm in my CFI course now and I feel completely lost and I feel like I'm not getting any quality training where I'm at with my school. I would switch schools but the VA won't let me. So that sucks.

A bird just came by and told me that Aerial Banners is looking for guys. For a "low time" gig...it's not bad. It is what it is.

It's been discussed here several times, but banner tow training isn't something stellar. Sure it is work and it is flying, but not worth paying anything for.

A reputable operator will pay YOU during training.

Yes they are. I "phone" interviewed with them and the guy told me to get the tailwheel endorsement and he would take me. No money for that right now :(

You know of a contact? I'll get my tail wheel this weekend if that's the case

Agreed

My family owns a banner tow operation.

Paying for "banner tow training" is about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Tailwheel time is everything.

Can you tell us a little more about the training? Is it just a couple hours and ground work? Or is there any sort of real faa check ride? I was gonna google it but that requires....well, googling!
