Back to Grand Forks

Grand Forks is a hole, but a friend of mine who grew up there swears by The Red Pepper (Mexican fast food place). In fact, it's the only thing she likes about the place. If you haven't tried it already, it may be the one sparkle in all that muck.
you forgot the :sarcasm: tag

Whoa there buddy. Wait a minute. Your talking to a Mexican here. Red Pepper is NOT Mexican food. It is the most disgusting North Dakotanized crap food I've ever tasted. A "grinder" is not Mexican, surprise people (why do some poeple think it is?). People who grow up here do swear by The Red Pepper... everyone else from all other states knows how nasty it is.

Ah! Well.

She IS very North Dakotan (or, she is in the sense that she grew up there, she now she lives way far away in MPLS ;) ) but she did live in New Mexico for a while, if that helps. (kidding)

Um, but, "Uncle!"

Does that mean you DON'T like the Red Pepper?

(I only ate there once when she picked me up in Fargo and brought me with her to GF. I wasn't all that impressed, but she loves the food.)
Taco shop in Fargo is better, but it is still not "authentic Mexican" food.

Taco Shop - never went there. I liked Taco John's for their Fiesta Chicken Salad. Mmmmm.

(I don't know if I've ever had any authentic Mexican food. Having never been to Mexico or eaten dinner with a Mexican family, I wouldn't have anything to compare it to. So, when I say "Mexican" as it pertains to food, it should be understood that I'm talking about the Mexican food the typical American understands to be Mexican food. BUT! I understand the frustration. I grew up in Germany, and it's disconcerting to discover what some Americans think is actual German food.)

There was used to be an authentic mexican resturant downtown. It closed down because this town wouldn't know good food if it smacked them in the face.

"Oh yar donchya know that paridiso resturant is so gee golly good. You betchya."

i hate the fact that Paradiso is one of the better resturants in this town and they aren't anything to write home about

Ehh, I ordered panang chicken and they brought me tofu here in PHX. Bastiges.

Paulo's closed for a combination of reasons. I have a friend who knows the owners so I found out why it closed. But, take what I'm going to say with a grain of salt (it's gossip).

Food flavor:
For one, North Dakotans were not open to the "different" taste of authentic Mexican food - they're used to Paradiso's. So, after a few months of "failure" to meet North Dakotans' expectations, Paulo's had to find ways to make their food more like Paradiso's (it's Paraíso in Spanish btw...they spelled it wrong...even in their own restaurant name!!!). At the beginning, the restaurant maintained their food's authenticity pretty well. Their beans and rice tasted exactly like my mother's, their enchiladas were very good, and their enchilada sauce was homemade. About 6 months later they changed their food around completely and turned bland and gross.

Service issues:
Service was great in the beginning. But, one day I took about 8 friends for lunch. Our server seemed to be very fed up with his job. Silverware and napkins were missing from the table. After ordering our food, we asked the server for silverware and napkins. He pointed to the table next to us telling us "get them ourselves".

La Migra:
Yes, La Migra. All the cooks were illegal. Due to some sort of outside affair involved with the owners, the victim in the affair called INS and had all the cooks deported. Where the heck are you going to find any white person in Grand Forks who knows how to cook authentic Mexican food? Not going to happen.

So, it was a combination of lowering food quality, lowering service quality, and La Migra that ended it.

Aeigh! Sounds like when I first moved to Prescott, AZ back in 1988, but at least we could escape to PHX.

When you're in GFK, where in the hell do you escape to?

We try create our own upscale environment as best as possible. I hate it when my friends and I can't figure out what we want to do and we end up at one of the bars down town. YUCK!!!!

Is walmart here not even 24 hours anymore? pfftttt. I headed over there to fill my hunger and the lady said they were closing in 10 mins. :(

They close from 12 to 12(?) on Saturday night to Sunday morning. Those lazy bastards wouldn't let me in 20min. before closing. All I needed was a damn vaporizer!!! Everyone else lets people in until close. I put up with it just fine the few years I worked retail. Why can't they?:mad::mad:

Because they're Wally World.

If you have a bad experience there and write about it, they'll call you a "Hater" or a "Bean curd eating miscreant" and discount your concerns.

Which is why I don't shop at Wal Mart.

When I go to Detroit, I want to see Detroit, not what some dingleberry purchaser in Arkansas thinks that people in Detroit want to see.

Localism rocks.

(Try finding shorts at a major department store in PHX when it's 80 degrees (and January!) here: "It's winter! We have sweaters and slacks, it's the cold weather season!"
