Back Pain

I suffer from occasional back pains. I know a lot of people have this but I was wondering if there is a way to narrow it down to one possible cause. I sleep mostly on my stomach and have heard that can do it and I also slouch a little. Its more of a discomfort thing then constant pain. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advanced. Great forum idea by the way.

Ah, the scourge of mankind. Back pain is the price we all pay for walking on two feet.

Most back pain is muscular and is aggravated by lifting or moving in a manner that irritates the muscles of the low back. Most often poor posture, being over-weight, and improper lifting techniques are the factors that cause a flare in the pain. As long as the pain does not radiate into the buttock or down the leg and there is no loss of bowel or bladder control, then it is usually localized to muscles. If these warning signs are present, one should see their physician to be sure there is not a ruptured disc.

The treatment of most back pain is 1) to remain physically active, 2) use NSAID’s such as ibuprofen (800 mg 3 times a day), and avoid the activities that make the pain worse. If it is muscular, it will gradually resolve in 10 to 14 days. If the pain is severe enough for you to see a physician, it is probably severe enough to avoid flying for a few days. Be cautious about what non-AME’s prescribe because the medications may be disqualifying in itself. This is especially true of muscle relaxants and narcotic pain medications. These are OK for the short term but should not be taken when flying.

If you do not have one of the above warning signs and there is no loss of strength in the legs, avoid getting an MRI. There are many false positive MRI studies of the low back. Approximately 25% of persons who had a back MRI without symptoms had the MRI interpreted as “abnormal”. The MRI is a great tool but must be interpreted in conjunction with the physical examination by the physician.

Does having surgery on your lower back DQ a person from a 1st class medical. I just have some sharp pains in my lower back that I've had for 2 years now. They're at their worst after I run but hurt almost all the time.

The surgery is not disqualifying.

Read the post just before yours. Most back pain is mechanical and related to muscle strain and posture. Developing good back exercises and reducing back strain are the most important things you can do. Surgery relieves the pressure on nerves when a disc ruptures. After surgery, you will have intermittent back spasms (often unpredictably) for years. You don't have the pain you once had but you are never 100% again. Been there, done that:(

I'm bumming. Noticed a few weeks ago a weird weakness/numbness occasionally behind my knees. Now, occasional shooting pain down both legs and lower back. Seems to be getting gradually but progressively worse. I won't be able to get to my doctor for at least a week now. My google fu points to things not so good. At least sitting is fine. Getting up and walking around - not so much!

Currently munching the 800mg ibu's.

What is the average recovery time to fly in a bad case scenario? Otherwise healthy (albeit, 40 lbs overweight!) 5 decades old lad..

I'm a true believer in daily stretching plus neck, back, hip, and groin exercises. A top notch sports medicine physical therapist can help you determine which ones are best for you. If you are in the Midwest I recommend Brandon Snyder in Chicago.

Dr Forred:

I'm so appreciative that you're available to assist here - Thank You!

My sincere apologies for hijacking this thread temporarily but I just wanted to share a little something. I had some annoying back pain a few years ago and through some trial and error I narrowed it down to sitting skiwampus with a wallet in one back pocket and not in the other. I put my wallet in another location and my back pain went away - I was amazed. I know the easy things are not always the answer, but I just thought I'd point out to anyone in the same situation that sometimes there are simpler fixes than surgery and heavy medication.

I hope all is well in Phoenix.

Damn...I'm gonna have to try that.

Ive had back pain for the past 5 years now. The wallet trick truly works. Anytime I'm driving it comes out of my back pocket and anytime I'm flying it does into my flight case. I also bought myself an inversion table and love the thing. Anytime my back flares up I get on the table for about 10 minutes and I'm good as new.

Another thing that I've found that helps is the way I sleep. I used to be a side sleeper and used 2 pillows. Now I pretty much sleep flat on my back and only use one pillow. Ive noticed a huge change in the frequency of mornings I would wake up with back pain.

Hope this helps!

Seems like sciatic issues. I get them from sitting too long, which sucks with this job.

I do that stretch, and it helps a ton!
