First of all from the article.

"It's all well and good for Willie Walsh to say he's prepared to work for free..."

So he has taken a pay cut and also agreed to work for free for the company. Executive salaries are a lot of money but you're talking about a huge company even refunding all of it wouldn't make any difference to financial health of the company. I'm not in favor of golden parachutes and I also think a big portion of executive compensation should be tied to the performance of the company. I'm on board with those kinds of reforms but I don't think its fair to demonize this guy.

Honestly, does it not seem like a nutty request, to even ask people to work for free (even at their option)?

Yeah it does but I don't think it is wrong for them to make it. I certainly wouldn't work for free unless the company had done something important for me before.

When I worked at Eagle, every now and then they'd have a "come super-clean the planes" day. Where they'd ask for volunteers to come in (unpaid) to ORD and totally clean up the interiors of however many planes they could find with some down time.

It was usually on a Saturday, and the ORD station manager & OPS manager and all of the ORD station management would help. I didn't so much mind that, as it was kind of a "special", every-now-and-then thing, where we were just trying hard to make the planes clean & presentable. In no way was there ever any pressure to participate, but they'd usually get enough of a turnout to do some good. We weren't being asked to do our own jobs OFF the clock.



I wonder if BA realized the backlash of negative press this would lead to? Were they trying for the "sympathy" aspect maybe? FAIL.
 
This thread has gotten to be too much about personalities and not enough about the topic at hand. Time out...
