B18 Aton Bay Ice Runway

Decided to take a few hours and fly out to the only recognized ice runway in the lower 48 the other day. Conditions were great and had a good time.

Here is a short video I made from base to final and the landing. It was a very last minute idea to film it so had I planned ahead I would have had the camera somehow mounted behind my head to show the pilots view. You get the idea though.

And yes, it was a greaser 3 pt landing...would you expect any less?

Cubcaptain...it was not my dad....It has taken me three years to undue the damage you've done!

Greaper-Colgan is not my only source of income. Before coming to Colgan I put a large sum of money away and was able to pay cash for nearly everything I have leaving me no debt. I grossed 30K for Colgan, 10K for my part time 91 gig and have a wife who has her masters in nursing. To top it off the plane only burns 4GPH so including hangar, insurance, fuel and reserves direct cost is under $35/hr. It also doesnt hurt that it is a 50/50 partnership....with my father so we both have less than 35K in the plane and then just the few expenses it carries.

Good question though...flying is (usually) not cheap and min guarantee at Colgan is a joke.

Inverted- Wheel landings have their place....this was not it.

Here is a comparison with a low wing tri gear aircraft. Different technique but we both had the same result.

I used to teach in that Tiger. The pilot claimed to be a former Naval Aviator...Turns out that was a lie.

I applaud his technique in recognizing that braking action was nil he decided to use the snowbank to avoid an overrun.

Very impressive

Awesome, I was just hoping you had some sort of inside cheap flight information ;).

Unfortunately no....and of course I didnt get this airplane until I was over ATP mins so its not like I could use it to build cheap flight time.

Tuck-Nice catch...at least I got it right on the youtube title, that would have been embarrassing. Actually, who am I kidding..I dont really get embarrassed.

Looks like I sat next to a fellow JC'er at the Alton Bay diner and didn't even know it! Are you going back up there for the Winter Carnival, USMC-SSGT?
