In 1964, a Boeing B-52 bomber on loan from the Air Force back to Boeing for flight test encountered heavy sheer turbulence which broke the entire vertical assembly off of the aircraft in flight. This is the official US Air Force documentary film regarding the event.

 
That is pretty impressive. Reminds me of the old WW2 pictures where you would see B17s flying with their verticals basically shot away.
 
This has happened more than once with B-52s -- at least once more with an active duty BUFF that I've seen a photo of. Plus, a couple E-6s lost tails (or significant chunks of them) in the late 80s when Boeing was flight testing them.
