Lycra Man
Nothing ugly about that at all.. Its like a modern ME262
You can't just throw something this bad ass up there, say that you've talked to the guy and simply leave it at that. Dude, I'm disappointed in you. We need details.
It does look pretty cool...![]()
Eh, I'm not really intrigued by the airplane myself. The guy has an abundance of green stuff and time to play with and this has apparently been an idea of his for quite a while. I saw it a couple of times while it was being worked on and modified in the later stages. There's quite a bit of lead weight that had to be added in the tail. I remember that was an issue when I went up there once.
My initial response when I saw the airplane and what he wanted to do with it was "Why?", and it still is. From what I know, the Aerostar itself was a heck of an airplane anyway. There's also a handful of single engine turbines already out there that don't require you to climb past the pilot in the cockpit to enter and allows you to sit in club seating. Unlike the Aerostar...
It just doesn't really interest me. Now if the guy was working on strapping a jet engine to the bottom of a Waco or modifying a Pitts to some degree, I'd be all over it and intrigued. But taking a twin-engine airplane and turning it into one....? Not so much.
I pretty sure that Ted Smith designed it to be a jet. He also designed the Aero Commander.
And was involved with the design of the Douglas A-26
Looks like those engines will FOD out pretty quick though.....
I love the looks of this thing. Always been a huge fan of the lawn dart. However does anyone else see this as FOD waiting to happen?
I definitely wouldn't take it to a gravel strip... but then I don't think that's the point![]()
I would take this turbine on gravel strips all day.Not really sure how wise it would be to take just about any turbine into a gravel strip. And I for sure would want a long gravel strip for even a regular Aerostar. They take up a ton of runway, and are NOT bush planes to begin with. IIRC, it's still the fastest GA pisotn twin ever certified.
I read somewehre(can't remember where though) that there is plans to stretch it as well. If they do, I say add it all to the front, and put a pair of TFE731's of a Lear31 on the back, and have a completely bad ass Aerostar! It'd be a mini Westwind.
