Greetings,

I've been working on my IFR rating and like to take a weekend prep course to knock out the Written Exam. I came across Aviation Seminars and American Flyers which both offer a weekend class to get you ready for the IFR Written Exam.

Any feedback / recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Kevin - How are you? It's been a long time. I've been flying out of Chicago Executive PWK with Skill Aviation. Trying to wrap up my IFR and then head over to ATP at your old spot to get my multi done.

What have you been up to these days? Are you still doing the airline gig? If you're ever come back in the area hit me up and we can grab some drinks.

Hope all is well. Keep in touch.

Cheers.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, for a written like the IFR written I wouldn't suspect you would need any prep course to prepare.

I would be willing to say that a Gliem red book, six pack of Mountain Dew, and a nice quite evening should be more then enough to get you squared away.

The only written I used any kind of paid prep for was the ATP, and even that was at home using Sheppard Air...........God bless them!

I have never scored less then a 90% on a written, and I'm not the sharpest tack in the box! o_O

I used Sporty's study buddy way back when I was about to take my IR written. Spent about 2 days on it and scored 100%

Save your money for better things down the line. Just my $.02

I just purchased the sporty's study buddy app for my ipad to prepare for the commercial written. I haven't used it a whole lot but it seems to be a really nice app. I would suggest just getting some kind of software or a book with the questions in it to prepare for the exam. That is a really easy way to knock it out.

Yeah and the app only cost 15 bucks! It supposedly has all of the questions that are published for the written, which would be the same questions that are provided on the Gleim test prep software, except the Gleim software cost 60 dollars! It is one heck of a deal.

Sheppard Air has a written prep for the instrument and commercial now. I know a couple of people who studied the instrument prep for the weekend and both made in the 90s on the written. Not to mention neither one took over 20mins. to complete the exam. Sheppard Air is still the best deal going for test prep.

Jonathan,

I am a former American Flyers instructor and also taught several of the written prep classes. A common misunderstanding is that you can come to one of these classes with not much prior knowledge, take the test and pass. Well if you are a good study it is certainly possible, but not likely. There is just too much information to retain in 3 days (and we covered it allllllll, trust me). Believe you me, you are completely spent after spending 24 hours in a classroom in a 3 day period. That being said, there is still value in these classes. They are primarily designed as a last minute cram session after you have been studying the gleim book for a week or two. Maybe you need to clear up some confusion or get a more detailed explanation on some of the subject areas. So you can decide for yourself if the $250 or whatever they charge now is worth it to you.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Really appreciate it.

I am going to go with Shepphard Air and see how their prep course works out.

Thanks all.
