I was trying to schedule a checkride for one of our pilots. When I asked the inspector if he had anyone that could do it, he said
"actually we're looking for qualified candidates like yourself to give that checkride!" He stated they are about 300 inspectors short nationwide.

I don't understand why this can't be contracted out. The FAA will never be able to find 300 folks at the ATP level....

I wouldn't be too sure about that. Pays twice as much as a regional FO. And weekends off. Very tempting.

It is a good job.
Start as a 12 if you can and in a year bid for a 13. 14's are a bit harder to get. If you start as an 11 or lower it will take longer to make a 13, have to have one year in grade to bid higher.
Do not need an ATP, only commercial with CFI, CFII & MEI with some dual given, don't recall how much.
Go to usajobs.gov and search for series 1825 for ASI positions. (See link above)
It is NOT a flying job, maybe you will get 30-40 hours a year.
Job security.....if congress will get their act together and no more furloughs!
Matching socks are optional but you can't wear red shoes.

I'd do it. I really don't have much of an ego. My interaction with the FAA has been limited, but I don't both times I have had to deal with them.

The first time, I called them. I was trying seek guidance on how to legally conduct an off drop zone charted parachute jump. Holy heck, it was as if I had committed high treason. After being berated, I basically told the guy, "Hey, I called you, I am trying to do this legally and safely and you're not bring much help." After I fired back the inspector's tone changed. I was able to get done what I need to. Not having to go through that crap would be nice.

The second time, I was caught up in dropzone wars where one DZ would tattle on another, I was just the poor schmuck caught in the middle.

It can be done better. Besides I could just go fly at the Air Force when I wanted to.

had an interview scheduled last year but ended up canceling it. I'd rather be flying than doing the inspector job

Was hired as a helicopter airman inspector in 2007 and after jumping through hoops for a year, I was furloughed after one day when the big Silverstate Helicopter debacle took place. Never again.

Skyway Airlines had great job security as well. At least that's what I was told as I was leaving the comforts of there for a mainline carrier.
Wait a minute. Are you comparing the job security (or lack there of) to that of government employment? The airline history is riddled with furloughs and bankruptcy, unlike the government. Granted it shuts down every now and then for a few weeks while the govt figures out a budget but unless you really mess up, or there's a drastic change in the economy, I thought those jobs were pretty secure.

They are "pretty secure" unless you are one getting furloughed. The last furlough lasted 16 days. Pretty nerve racking during that time.

Wow, a whole 16 days? Not even enough time to collect an unemployment check.
I've applied 3 or 4 times over the years, and never received a response. I worked pretty hard on the KSA essays, as well. I am more than qualified for the position, and my FSDO seems to be very short staffed.

I like how the job posting I saw said you couldn't have MORE than 2 accidents in the last 5 years.
Yea I like that one also. Some say more than 2 violations of the FAR's in 5 years.

COME ON PEOPLE, APPLY FOR THESE JOBS, WE NEED GOOD INSPECTORS, NOT MEDIOCRE ONES!

:-)
