Avelo Airlines Hiring

Well-met in the Ka-tet
A new startup based in Houston, if anyone is interested...while it's always a bit risky going with a brand new carrier, they do already have a certificate (formerly belonging to Xtra Airways) and $125 million in funding.

Ah, memories. XTRA was originally Casino Express. They had 737-200adv and had a unique way to extend range. They did not accept checked baggage. You had to carry on all your bags. Each pax was allowed two carry ons. The only requirememt was the bag had to fit thru the scanner at the security checkpoint. Back then, the checkpoint scanners were large enough to fit bags that would normally be checked bags. These particular 737s featured either 118 or 122 coach seats, and overheads around the size of erj 145 bins. Made the jet seem much more roomy, but obviously the carry ons wont fit. So the ground handler would setup a belt loader at 1R, and send all the bags to the bins as the pax boarded. These bags were calculated at carry on weight. So you had a full 732 going CLE to RNO without a fuel stop. That was pretty slick.

I think the belt loader from the galley door is something majors should have been doing once carry on madness started with pax. Not saying run bags as carry on, but use it to resolve the problem of pax and FAs refusing to believe bins are full.

Yes, much easier than taking the bags thru the jetway and down the stairs to the ramp and having to take the bags to the aircraft right side where the pits are. My guess why the majors did not do this is that the galley at 1R is being used to serve the pre departure drink to the folks sitting in F and the noise from out on the ramp and exposure to the elements would annoy the airline's best customers. It would work much better at ULCC carrier like Allegiant, Spirit or Frontier that doesn't have a premium cabin in the front.

Would be great if it was set up with a laser scanner like how the bag networks are setup. Pax would only have to drop their bag down the bag slide right before entering the aircraft and the bag would be scanned on the way down the slide or when it got to ground level before being placed in the cargo hold.

But unions want the job of scanning those bags, which gets them more members, etc.

Easy enough to have a ramp or CSA scan. Ramp already does this with checked bags at most airlines.
