Avantair

It's "safety". It's an ALPA catch phrase. I like the idea. The cargo cutout is wrong cause there should be one level of safety. Bringing that to 135 is problematic as it's a different industry somewhat used to the Feds looking the other way. For example, I sometimes read about 135 and 24 hour on call. Whitlow made 24 hour on call illegal, yet I often read it still exists at some 135's. Crazy business we are in....

Big brown encourages unsafe behavior at the feeder level.

I'm pretty sure 24 on call was never legal, and there have been more opinions from the chief consul on the topic than I can count. Including one say that the POI or FSDO can't say it's ok.

You fail to understand that a 135 certificate is SUPER difficult to obtain, but nearly impossible to lose. The amount of oversight is frighteningly little. There are people in our neighborhood running 134 1/2 flights, and despite numerous calls and complaints to the FAA, not so much as even an eye has been batted at them.

Call the FBI, they actually go after the non certificated "companies".

135 cert isn't really that hard to get actually. It's not easy, but it's not super hard. Fill out the paperwork and wait.

24 hour on-call is alive and well.

Yup. Problem is, if a pilot squeals about it, he is subject to violation. So why rat yourself out. I worked at a place that would write in your off time at the end of the month. And when you have a records inspection, you get fair warning to get all of the paperwork doctored. So it's really hard to catch.

Yup...tho I don't work there anymore, I do know with certainty that they were grounded again last Thursday.

Avantair Fleet Sidelined Again
After weathering a three-week voluntary grounding stemming from a maintenance issue late last year, operations at Piaggio Avanti fractional provider Avantair have been pretty much normal. That is until last Thursday, when an anonymous call to the Clearwater, Fla.-based company’s whistleblower hotline initiated the grounding of its fleet again. During last year’s grounding, Avantair committed to implement “industry-leading safety and maintenance programs” similar to those at major airlines. This includes self audits, one of which is a continual audit of time-controlled parts that must be inspected and/or replaced after a certain number of hours in service. Avantair was actively engaged in such an audit when it received the hotline call questioning the adequacy of its system for monitoring these time-controlled parts. “Though we did not give credence to this call, our substantial internal operating procedures mandated that we take immediate action to fully investigate the concern,” Avantair CEO Steven Santo toldAIN. “Since more than 100 parts on each of our aircraft are time-controlled, the only way to do this in a timely manner was to perform inspections and check our entire fleet. We are now in the midst of doing so.” Santo said the company’s focus on safety “is unending and unwavering.” Despite past challenges, he said, “We will not be deterred in our efforts to operate Avantair as the safest carrier in the industry. Our owners and cardholders have demonstrated considerable patience and support for our safety programs.” Avantair anticipates that it will begin release of aircraft back into service on a continual basis this week, following the completion of these inspections. One of Avantair’s airplanes, N140SL, was already airborne at press time.

What's everyone's guess as to when they are closed permanently? We've done some avantair charters and those members don't sound too happy.

We have covered a few too. We have picked the same guy up a couple of times and he was pissed long before this stuff happened. I think this might be the final nail...

Don't they have some sort of maintenance tracking software? Grounding a fleet for 100 time limited "parts" on each plane sounds like very poor aircraft management.

That does sound a little weird. Even most single plane 91 operators have some sort of camp to track mx.
