Availability of Flight Manuals to Public

Since 9/11 I though I've read that the public can't get airliner manuals that currently in operation.

Well I found a Flight Safety ERJ 145 Flight Crew Manual in a used book store yesterday and was just wondering if these things are even supposed to be out there floating around,

Techincally, I think that falls under the realm of security sensitive material, but it's hard to enforce. About the only way the airlines can enforce that is requiring employees to return their manuals when they leave the company. If it's manuals dealing with a type rating someone bought, I can't think of any way to enforce it. "How to fly the ERJ" probably isn't near as bad as, say, a company flight ops manual that has all the security procedures spelled out.

Then Flight Options is not happy that one of their crewmembers left the ops specs PDF on the computer at the airport I used to fly out of.

the public should be protected from op specs pdf files, but not because of any security implications. the average joe's head might explode reading about exemption 3585.

I don't think it is illegal, and if it is they can come and get me! I've got a 5-6 or so and were given to me by another pilot, so I don't think it is a big deal.

...like, oh, say, taking your shoes off.

Just last night when I went through security at BWI, I thought to myself, " I feel so much safer. Not only did they see my socks, but they saw the stickers on my laptop. How could anything bad happen!!!

Tony, Lloyd, I think we have an accord.

Here's what the late great Kurt Vonnegut had to say on the issue:

"The shoe thing at airports and Code Orange and so on are world-class practical jokes, all right. But my all-time favorite is one the holy, anti-war clown Abbie Hoffman (1945-1989) pulled of during the Vietnam War. He announced that the new high was banana peels taken rectally. So then FBI scientists stuffed banana peels up their asses to find out if this was true or not. Or so we hoped."

eBay won't let you sell any current flight manuals or uniform parts for any airline. Communists.

Yes indeed! I started reading "Breakfast of Champions" and it was the first time I actually started laughing because of a book!

(OK, besides "Stick and Rudder," because his making fun of "Green pilots" makes me laugh)

And speaking of which, Stick and Rudder will teach a terrorist bomber how to fly a plane better than any eeeearejay manual.

Thing is, it takes very little piloting skill to crash a plane into a building. Let's see, push the yoke forward, the buildings get bigger. Turn right to go right, left to go left.

Any questions?

So do they really think that the next Mohammad Atta really gives a damn about how the bleed air or the APU works?

meh.

When I first started, 3585 was pretty much a mystery to me. Then again, when we asked for deeper clarification we got the standard "Ah, that's CA stuff kid. You'll learn it on the line." response. A little over a year later, it's clearer to me than the dispatchers. Had a guy try to dispatch us with a 1/4 mile visability in the main body and a 2 mile in the TEMPO statement of the forecast and say we're good to go under 3585. Sorry, pal. If it were REVERSED, you'd be right.
