Attn Commutair dispatchers

Y’all gotta get your fuel planning under control cause we’re tired of having to spin 90% of the Commutairs that come to EWR cause they’re too heavy. This wasn’t an issue until the last year or so.

No offense but are you sure you're not exaggerating? I just looked at a dozen or so flights every day back to Christmas on Flightaware and two of them held, some had delay vectors. Roughly 12 different flights, 10 days, 2 held. Nothing out of the ordinary for that part of the country.

yes I am sure I am not exaggerating. None of them are put into a holding pattern but rather vectored around in our airspace til they’re ready. We don’t have space for holding in our airspace. I did it with 2 this morning alone myself and other people did as well. I don’t remember the flight numbers though.

when we are landing 22’s, it’s the ones who come in on the SHAFF and FLOSSI arrivals. When we land 4’s, it’s the ones who come in on the PHLBO and Williamsport arrivals
 
there’s a lot less when someone is spinning 20 miles from the airport in the middle of a 60 hour push.

but I came here out of frustration. It’s the only airline where it’s an issue and our official complaints have gone unanswered. I don’t see how the company is ok with it cause y’all gotta be burning millions of dollars worth of gas at this point just spinning a hole in the ozone over NJ alone. It doesn’t matter if the weather is VFR or IFR, windy or not. It’s just every day with almost every single flight. A lot of the pilots haven’t helped either and wait til they’re cleared for the approach before they say they can’t land. But this isn’t Topeka, Kansas. We don’t have the airspace to accommodate someone spinning. I had to put Washington Center in a hold 2 days ago because I suddenly had to re-fit a Commutair that wasn’t supposed to be there and ran out of gaps in the sequence.

In all fairness to the company... They can train dispatchers and crew on the company fuel policy all they want but the dispatcher and the PIC still have final say on how much contingency they feel is safe. A dispatcher literally can't plan a flight to land overweight so this is really more an issue of possibly the flight planning software not giving accurate burns and/or extra fuel being added that isn't needed without the dispatcher's knowledge. Regional jets have such small room for 'error' it's more often than not that you are dealing with a max structural issue on every flight.
 
If you see you're going to be a touch overweight on landing, usually you drop the gear 20 miles early and it takes care of that.

We underburned so bad once we put em down out of like 18k.
 
Ah, the great EWR paradox. Airport goes into holding almost everyday which makes dispatchers and captains put hold fuel on since they have been burned in the past, which sometimes causes planes to be over landing weight which leads to holding which leads to crews and dispatchers adding holding fuel.....
 
lol - this is so funny to me. N90 is the last thing I think about when someone says efficient.

for the amount of planes trying to go several different airports in such a confined area, the fact it works at all is pretty miraculous

I don't work at CommutAir but this detail leads me to believe their flight planning software plans the fuel required to land on most distant runway. At my shop we plan runway to runway so if my flight's coming in on PHLBO I can select landing on the 4s for lower burn, or 22s for higher burn - as appropriate.

If they aren't able to plan runway to runway the alternative to planning to the furthest runway would be to plan burn to the closer runway, and if EWR is on the opposite config burn into EXTRA/FAR :45 to land.

Another idea would be figure out what the burn difference is to land on the 4s vs 22s and leave that much room between planned and max landing weight. With workload what it is at the regionals I don't see many dispatchers taking/having the time to do this though.
