ATP written Lifespan

Once you take the ATP written , how long is it good for? Two years?

If your not going to interview for the regionals until December , shouldn't you wait till then to take the test so it will be good for two years. If upgrade time is less then two years , it would still be valid , therefor you would not have to retake the test.

If you fail the ATP written , and an instructor signs you off for the retake , how long is the sign off good for ?

Advice please ..............

Thanks

If you get hired for a 121 carrier your atp written doesn't expire. Doesn't matter how long it takes to upgrade, as long as your written was still valid when you got hired, it never expires.

Sorta. I believe if you LEAVE that regional to go to another regional and it's been more than 2 years, you have to take it again. But if you stay with the same airline that you were hired with, then it doesn't expire. Example: Get hired at Pinnacle, ATP written was taken on 11/05. Decide life sucks and go to XJT in 12/07, written is no longer valid.

At least, that's how it was explained to me.

As everyone else has said, the written itself is good for 2 years. However, if you get hired on at a 121 Carrier it is good until you upgrade, so I would go ahead and take it now. The only thing that I don't know about is how long it is valid if you switch 121 carriers.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I have a related question:

So I fly 135 but have been thinking about going to ATP for the one day written. My understanding is that it is only for the 121 test. Can I take the 121 written and then get the cert part 135????

The only difference between 121 and 135 is the question bank. You don't get ATP 121 or 135 certificate.
And the ATP stays good as long as your 135 employed also!

it doesnt matter when you took the written or when it expired. as long as you complete an approved 135/121 upgrade programe. it could have expired before you even were hired at your company. i believe its in 61.59(b)

Nah...

It's 61.39(b)

FAR 61.39 (b) said:
Notwithstanding the provisions of paragraphs (a)(1) and (2) of this section, an applicant for an airline transport pilot certificate or an additional rating to an airline transport certificate may take the practical test for that certificate or rating with an expired knowledge test report, provided that the applicant:

(1) Is employed as a flight crewmember by a certificate holder under part 121, 125, or 135 of this chapter at the time of the practical test and has satisfactorily accomplished that operator's approved--

(i) Pilot in command aircraft qualification training program that is appropriate to the certificate and rating sought; and
(ii) Qualification training requirements appropriate to the certificate and rating sought

I used to deal with this all the time as a test proctor. Your statement holds true... just posted the wrong reg. :)

Say I took my ATP written 6 months before getting hired by a 121 carrier.
I worked there for a year and then I left the 121 carrier.
Got hired by a new 121 carrier after not flying 121 for a year.
Is my expired written still good?

The way 61.39(b) is written... then it's still good as long as you complete that carriers PIC training program.

I can't figure out how to copy/paste from Adobe, but click on that and scroll down to section 65. All of the details are there, but the pertinent part is (emphasis theirs):

"FYI: Employment by a FAR Part 135 on-demand
operator does not qualify an applicant for an extension."

So that rules out every 135 freight company out there that I know of, and any pax charter places too.

Not saying I don't believe you, just that anyone planning on using expired test results at anyplace but a 135 commuter, could end up having their checkride discontinued.

Why they will allow it at a commuter and not at an on-demand is beyond me.
