Did my CFI-I, MEI in Jax. Had him for both checkrides. I'll say I dislike the man very much.

Are you up here any time over the next week (through next Wed)? I'll give you a call since I'm going to need it soon. :)

With regional airlines turnover rates being so high, and the cost to get even to this lousy point being 100k, the industry really isn't employment anymore. It is a hobby with financial damage control. If you really think about it now, the only ones who can make it through to a liveable wage are people who have supplemental (mom and dad) income. The investment required and the payoff make it financial suicide. You could group regional airline pilot with

- cruise ship employee
-ski lodge or skiing instructor
-seasonal or year round theme park employee
-alaska fishing boat employee
-bartender in the caribbean or mexico

If you think about it regional airline pilot falls in there. People who take these jobs know they aren't careers but more realistically adventures for rich kids with no career compass. The market will never turn these jobs into careers and it's just going to get worse for the regional pilots.

Huh?

- cruise ship employee

Seasonal employment.

-ski lodge or skiing instructor

Again. Seasonal employment.

-seasonal or year round theme park employee
Minimum wage carnival roustabout? Wrong.

-alaska fishing boat employee
Dangerous work for excellent money. Doesn't apply.

-bartender in the caribbean or mexico

You're just pulling "fun" jobs out of your arse, aren't you?

Well, jeez, I'm glad you're here to tell me what the market will and won't do. Look into your crystal ball and tell me what the next Microsoft is gonna be, willya, so I can supplement my kids when they want to be unrealistic airline pilots.

Just my observation. The bailout rate is getting high in the lower end of the seniority scale. Nobody will have a long term contract unless they are at Mesa pay rates. The money invested just doesn't pay off for most people and they are starting to realize it. The ones who don't care don't need the money and are into flying just for the "cool" of it. When I went to brand X flight school years ago, these kids were everywhere. Back then after the "cool" wore off and the 25k debt was paid off, there was a career left over. It's not there anymore. Just Ipods, backpacks, SJS, and no career. When the SJS wears off, some find there way into corp, fracs, or the dwindling legacies, the rest wake up and get out. You don't see this? Sure reminds me of kids doing fun, not for money jobs until reality sets in. I don't have a crystal ball, just my 2 cents.

and the cost to get even to this lousy point being 100k,

I agree with some of what you say, but let's be realistic here - it's more like $35k-$40k if you shop around for ratings. When I went shopping for USB drives last night I could've easily spent $30+ for each 512mb drive I bought - which was what some places were selling them for. I ended up picking up two for $17. Why? Because I shopped around. Just like someone who is about to drop a good chunk of change would do.

I wouldn't count college costs, as that isn't directly "required" and people have been hired without 4-year degrees in the recent past into regionals. That being said, online college courses can be had for ~$10k for a 4-year, so work on that while you are sitting reserve at a regional.

well thats good news! keep weedn 'em out! more job oppertunities for me!

Seriously though, when theres a shortage of pilots, pay will go up accross the board. We already see it happening now at the flight schools. There is a shortage of CFIs...this in turn will turn into a shortage of pilots for the airlines.

How many hours of crane operating experience can I purchase for $25,000? Do they offer financing? Do I get to wear the helmet as well?

I checked into the training and for less than $4K you will receive a national license. Not all states require a license, but for those who do, the starting pay is above the $50.00 sum.

I see what the guy is saying. Its tough when you are trying to put yourself through flight school and know that you have loan payments starting soon after you finish and your first years pay probably won't cover them... My advice, Get your crane operators license work for 1000 hours at 50 bucks an hour and then you will have your 50 grand or however much it takes to pay for flight school.

Or join the millitary and use your GI bill... :) If its that important to you then the 4 or so years in the millitary should be worth it.

I can think of at least two plausible alternatives for pilots who want an improvement on QOL:

1) Find a way to be the boss
2) Do the job that nobody else wants to do

Of course, it's much easier to rant about things that cannot be changed in the near-term.

:yeahthat: This is why I consider you the wise guru, Matt. :)

ROFL!

Jacksonville...the ATP Mecca where everyone wants to go. The experience starts when you are told to Contact Jacksonville Center on...and just keeps getting better and better. :-)

I didn't realize they needed 2-year CFI's. Guess we lost Lt. Dan in FTY.
