ATP PTS question....1/4 scale

ILS approach on an ATP check ride states +/- 1/4 scale deflection

my question is:

Does this mean split the scale into 4, two left of center, two right of center.

Or does this mean: Split the left half into 4, and the right half into 4 and keep it in the first (effective) 1/8 on either side of center.

When I used to teach Instrument students under the 1/2 scale rule, I taught it as you can move half way from the center to the side, but anymore is too much and a bust. (just as the first example of 1/4 scale)

In between center and the first dot, either side.

Here's the wording out of the PTS:
[ QUOTE ]
As the markings on localizer/glide slope indicators vary, a one-quarter scale deflection of either the localizer, or glide slope indicator is when it is displaced one-fourth of the distance that it may be deflected from the on glide slope or on localizer position.

Like Mike said, that usually works out pretty close to 1 dot deflection.

I remember looking at that before I took my ATP and discussing it with a retired AA Capt. His response was "when you take the checkride you should be within half that". At the time that seemed extreme, heck, one dot seemed like a lot. Now, I see where he was coming from and 1/2 dot seems like a lot.

Thanks for the clarification guys... wish me luck, if I can make it through this training then the checkride will be no problem.

LUCK!

Good luck.

Are you doing it with a type? If not, you shouldn't need too much luck, it's a pretty easy checkride--as far as checkrides go, that is.

1/4 scale deflection on the HSI on the plane I fly is 1/2 dot on the glideslope and just over 1 dot on the localizer.

Hmmm....I didn't think so. ATP is the only checkride I didn't pass on the first attempt. Was yours pretty easy? Did you do it with a DPE or the Feds? Mine was with the Feds, and was a combined 6 month ride (Part 135) given by our (new) company check airman, but as a qualifying supervised check ride by the Fed riding in the back seat. The Fed was also observing me for the ATP ticket, and we did all the PTS Tasks for the ATP ride as well as the items normally required on the 135 check ride. Three birds with one stone. Except it took more than one stone.

Yeah, the Feds, depending on the examiner you get can be pretty interesting...plus you combined it with a 135 ride. I was just saying it's easier than say an instrument ride because there's nothing really new and there's no partial panel, stalls recover at the horn, steep turns are under the hood, etc.

Unfortunately I don't have my ATP yet, but I've trained a number of pilots for the ATP ride and they've all passed---knock on wood.

Speak of the devil, mine was the same situation, with one exception......I was on an initial 135 ride, with the company check pilot, and a Fed in the jumpseat behind us.
