ATP part 61 Checkride

I’m currently locked in a two year gig flight instructing. I don’t have too much else going on so I thought I might buckle down and get my ATP (multi). I would be getting it part 61. I’m familiar with the PTS but this is one check that you don’t hear too much about. Just looking for someone to shed some light and share their experience on a part 61 ATP check. Thanks.

Bascuela,

The ATP ride is the same whether it is 61, or combined with a type, 121, or 135 ride. It is basically a glorified instrument ride.
I assume you will be taking the ride in an aircraft in which case how the ride is administered will depend largely upon the examiner. Some examiners want to see a lot of single-engine stuff, others are terrified and prefer to keep both screws turning.
You stated that you have looked over the PTS, is there any specific information you are searching for?

:yeahthat:

Pretty much everything out of the PTS. They're usually pretty thorough on aircraft systems and operating limitations during the oral. There are several ILS approaches needed, a circling approach, and single engine non-precision approach (if my memory serves me correctly). You also have to do the stalls, steep turns and partial panel work. Other than that, they're looking to make sure you have total command over the aircraft the entire time. Shouldn't be too hard if you have been flying recently. I took mine without taking any lessons from an instructor...but going up with one for a few hours to practice definitely won't hurt. If you have access to a simulator, that also helps quite a bit.....

Thanks for the reply. I have access to a Baron simulator at work so I think I’ll just study up in there and go out a few times before the check. I keep hearing the same theme on the oral that systems are big and the rest is up to the DE. One question, is a STAR required to be flown on the flight, and if I’m reading the PTS correctly then the DE may not help unless the aircraft is typed for two or more?

I don't have a PTS handy (and I'm too lazy to look it up on the internet), but I didn't have to fly one on my checkride. The examiner did ask quite a few questions about STARs and SIDs though.......

As far as I know, it's a checkride like most others....You're the PIC and the examiner is merely an observant passenger.....The only time I would think he can help is if you're doing your approaches, hoodwork, etc. etc. in VFR conditions and not on an IFR flight plan. Then he *has* to look out for traffic and do the safety pilot thing....
