ATP instructors

Any ATP instructors out there....question for ya guys !! I'm about to apply for the career pilot program at ATP. Assuming I get hired after I'm done, and most likely have to relocate, how do you deal with the financial end of things ? I know you guys make between 1000 and 1400 a month approx. But with rent/living expenses, a vehicle payment maybe, insurance, and not to mention a huge loan monthly payment, how is it done ? I mean i'm thinking it would be impossible to survive. Any comments or advice ??

It depends on where you live. If you are instructing at a Career Pilot Location, you will have the option of living in the apartments for 200 a month. You get a total of 1000 a month, minus the 200 for room and utilities leaves you with 800 a month.

You learn to give up luxeries to live. I had massive amounts of student loans, and car insurance, etc. I was left with about $60 a month to live on by the time I was done. If you really want to work there, you will figure it out.

I suggest looking for somewhere else to instruct where you can take a job on the side if you need. There are better alternatives out there than instructing for ATP. If you wanna know more about my experience, PM me.

Good luck in the program.

Well, it never got THAT bad. I really liked instructing for ATP, but you have to be able to give 100% to your job and do what they ask of you. I didn't mind since I really liked flying the Seminole but I realize there was a cost. Financially, I think the pay isn't bad-$1000 a month, $40 per signoff that passes, and $200 housing at some of the bases. I have friends that instructed at other big schools and made much less. I was still able to pay $400 per month rent and eat fairly well.

I had a lot more fun with ATP when I ran my own office, and rented a room on my own. Money was a little tight, but the ability to run my own office and conduct training on my own was beneficial to me. The larger offices have more flying, but I learned more running my own office.

Yeah I'm sure if you want it bad enough, and your willing to make sacrafices...it's survivable. LOL...nothin wrong with Top Ramen. Dont forget Ramen Cup Nooles....or spam and mac&cheese from the dollar store

someone please tell me if there is still a box of keebler crackers in the right-2nd seat pocket of the citation? I remember hearing about it, then I saw it...

There was a whole bunch of "honey buns" in the back when I flew it. I didn't see any crackers. There was a box or so left so my flight partner grabbed them on the way out and ate most of them on our flight from CRG back down to SUA in the PA44. Talk about a suger high!

As to is it possible to get by on what we get paid. It certainly is. Sure you've got to remember to take the discount card with you to the supermarket and you don't eat out or go see movies that often. But on the other hand, for the most part you are working so much that you don't really even have time. There are days I dream about a cup of noodles all day because I know I can go to sleep after I eat it! Ok, so it's not really like that. The moral of this slightly long winded post is this: If you really want the job and the multi time that comes with it (and single too sometimes) you can get by just fine.

That describes 90% of my days instructing at ATP Las Vegas. I considered myself lucky!

Actually the ramen was there when I moved in. There's also some great ravioli in the freezer.

Next time I am in Vegas I am getting my halogen reading lamp back...for some reason I left it there...I hope to fly out in a couple of weeks and drop by. Been too long since I did the buffet at the Station
