ATP in SEA

Anybody have any experience with the ATP school in SEA? Actually they are located at the Tacoma Narrows Airport about 30 miles south of SEA. I'm thinking of getting my MEI there.

Thanks in advance.

Yea, I was the first instructor in the Sea. office. I left there when I went to work at Mesaba. If you go there make sure you take your check ride with Lee. The other examiner who does the MEI (who shall remain nameless) very difficult on the MEI ride.

Overall it's a great location. Are you going for the 15 hour MEI? If so you can couple this training with a ii or an ATP if you have the hours.

Already have the CFII and ATP plus beaucoup ME time. Just want to get the MEI as an add on. What is Lee's last name and does he work for another flight school?

SoonerMurph, I am currently practicing law but have been thinking about changing careers to aviation. I am 33 now. I remember from your earlier posts that you used to practice law as well. How are things going for you? Are you happy with your decision? Any advice/comments about the career move would be appreciated.

I believe you were a litigator. Is that right? So am I.

Lee Schuster is his name. He mainly works out of Oregon. He does drive up to Kelso for checkrides though. We would fly down to meet him there for checkrides. He's a great guy but he's a big time Eagles fan so don't mention the superbowl!

Who do you work for now? Kenmore?

Bob, you will be glad to know that I haven't sued anybody in nearly three years! The first step is admitting that you have a problem.

I shut down my law practice and sold our house for the shot at flying for a living. I trained with ATP and instructed for them for quite a while. I started in August of '02 so the industry was still suffering from the 9-11 hangover. Mesaba took a chance on me last November. They even let me fly their AVRO. Now I get to fly jets all over the country. It's the best job in the world. There is nothing I would rather be doing (certainly not sitting behind a desk, yelling at people on the phone and summarizing depositions for hours on end). Since I am now 38 years old I will probably be with Mesaba until I retire (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I have noticed that I lot of the ATP instructors are now being hired with 600-700 hours. I recently heard from a couple of former students of mine. One was just hired at Great Lakes and the other got a job flying the Met Life blimp!

Now is your chance to step away from the dark side of the FORCE. Life is for living! Have no regrets when it is over.

Did you have any interaction with Dave Stahl from Pavco at TIW? I think he is a DE on the PA-44.

Not working now anywhere. Want to get the MEI because I have a couple of leads here in the NW for instructing jobs. Would like to work at Kenmore but don't have enough float time for them. Their minimums are 500 float and I have just over 200.

Thanks FF

There should be a zack up there. he's a great instructor. a good stick and very knowledgable.

soonermurph, how is flying the blimp?? I sent y o a pm as well.

Yea, I set Dave up with Jim K just before I left. I hear that he is doing some of our checkrides now but all have been post-soonermurph at ATP. We fueled at Pavco so I got to know most of those guys.

Soonermurph how is the Avro going? as for Stahl doing an MEI ride, last I heard before I left, the local FSDO wouldn't let him do any MEI/ instructor rides in our seminoles...they wanted to keep the examiner privilages to a min. An actually the MEI rides got to be a bit smoother up there at TIW with the nameless, but sometimes there'd be a hiccup...

Hi, I am currently in JAX about half way through the Private Pilot program. I have several questions about ATP in Seattle:

1. How are the ATP facilities and training in Seattle?
2. Which airport? Is it the Narrows airport?
3. If I set a goal to get done in say 4 months, is this anywhere within reason assuming that I devote 6 full days per week to my training?

If anyone is an instructor or has trained in Seattle, I want to hear all about it. I need to make a decision soon about whether I go to Sacramento (90 day program) or Seattle (self-paced program).

Thanks,

Zippiguy

Yes, it is Tacoma Narrows. ATPS real time flight tracker lists the airport as TIW. Also I did some lessons in '99 at the PAVCO they are talking about, which is at Tacoma Narrows.

I am also curious what the answer to your question is since I am in Seattle, but I think I'd rather stay in a paid-for apartment in SAC than drive all the way from the north end of Seattle to TIW everyday!

Zippiguy: I assume you're referring to the Self-Paced 10 month program. If you devote 6 days per week, you will easily finish within 4 months.
I am proof of this, as I did the Self-Paced program at FLL, and I finished in 109 days. I too was weighing the 90 day program at one of the ACPP locations versus the Self-Paced program at FLL (I live in Ft. Lauderdale, which ended up being the deciding factor for me). I am now instructing for ATP, and could not be any happier with the choice that I made.

At the moment I am leaning towards the self-paced program in the Seattle area because if I can finish within four months, the time difference of one month is not a big concern for me. I will make that decision in the next couple of days.

While I do have a home in Redmond (60 miles away from TIW), the location at the Tacoma Narrows is not an issue because my parents live in Tacoma and they have offered to let me stay at their place as needed to save mileage on my car. TIW is only about 15 miles away from their place.

My parents also have other reasons for offering a room to me. They know that my daughter's nanny lives about a mile away and this means they would see a lot more of their grand-daughter if I stay at their place. So, it just kind of works out for everyone.

I made my final decision...it's Seattle, or rather Tacoma.
