ATP Circ Apch - VMC Only

We did an airplane progression (in cockpit photos) thread a few years back. Was cool. I'm not authorized circling approaches In a 737... Which would be the least of my problems considering I haven't flown one in 11 years!

CFI > C402 > Jetstream 31 > Saab 340 > DC9 > 737-300/400 > Dornier 328 > CRJ > LRJet > LR45

You have the most types of anyone I know. My brain would be a mess! :)

Who ever said the circle restriction is attached to your ATP isn't entirely correct. It depends how the ATP license is issued. If you do a circle on the ATP ride or during a later type ride it isn't attached to the license. It is normally only attached to the specific type rating.

Eg mine reads that E170/190, B727 circle VMC only.

The other types I can circle at published IFR mins as we did circles at mins during the type ride.

Not always. When you get your ATP at silver you will have a circling restriction on the ATP.

I can circle on the Hawker, but not the Hundo or Saab.
 
Some individuals have no restriction on the ATP, but individual types. Some who get their ATP through their employer will have the restriction on the license.

I was lucky they sent us all back to have the restriction removed.
 
Speaking of restrictions...how can they put a company specific restriction on an FAA license. Example: I've seen FedEx IROs license that had a pic type but a restriction that said something to the effect of "only valid while operating FEDEX aircraft". I saw something similar on a 777 FOs license for American. If you have a type rating how can it be limited to that company's aircraft. The Feds don't make a distinction.

That is a new one on me...I've only heard of the SIC limitation...Never a company specific restriction on a license. IF this is true I hope it doesn't catch on as it could be a way to screw pilots even more.

I just looked up the guy I knew from AA on the FAA airman registry...I quote

As stated, I've seen FedEx say the same thing

wow... That sucks... If you had a 737 type, and it said the same above, so much for contract work for ya' when you get out...
 
I don't think the airlines are using it so much to screw the pilots but to get out of some extra training they may have to do if they issue a type for all aircraft in the model.
