ATP / ATP Written

This has probably been discussed before. I am furloughed 121, and my ATP written will expire at the end of this month. I've read different answers to this and heard different things from the FSDO. Since I am not actively flying 121/135/etc. will my written expire? I've also heard that since I technically still have a seniority number with a 121 carrier my written will not expire. So, what's the right answer?

Either way, I'm actually thinking about getting my ATP done in a Seneca before the end of the month. It'll probably run me around 2k. My written wouldn't expire and I would stay somewhat current and be more marketable.

Question is 1) is my written actually going to expire 2) should I fork up the money and get my ATP or 3) say screw it and just re-take the written again later when I get my ATP?

Opinions/advice please...

PS: I have no desire to retake the written. Also, I'm going to try and see if I can maybe get some fund for the ATP through the WIA?

Your written would still expire even if you were actively flying 121/135. There's nothing about 121/135 flying that keeps your ATP knowledge test results from expiring. There are circumstances under which you may use an expired test report, though.

(b)Notwithstanding the provisions of paragraphs (a)(1) and (2) of this section, an applicant for an airline transport pilot certificate or an additional rating to an airline transport certificate may take the practical test for that certificate or rating with an expired knowledge test report, provided that the applicant:

(1) Is employed as a flight crewmember by a certificate holder under part 121, 125, or 135 of this chapter at the time of the practical test and has satisfactorily accomplished that operator's approved—

(i) Pilot in command aircraft qualification training program that is appropriate to the certificate and rating sought; and

(ii) Qualification training requirements appropriate to the certificate and rating sought;

Just go do a few hours in the Seneca and then take the ATP ride. It's a glorified instrument ride in multiple aircraft configurations.

As long as you can do a W&B on the ground you'll be fine.

Or if you're hurting for money, go get in a 172 and do an ATP in that. I got my ATP initially in the PC-12. Kept my written from expiring. Did the ATP-Multi Engine later on with my current job.

This is what I learned when I was trying to use and expired ATP test. It can only be accepted by a 121/135 air carrier that you are working for and after going through their approved course. Once expired you cannot use it to get your ATP from an outside source.

Having your ATP can never hurt, plus you can write it off. Retake the written unless you can the checkride done ASAP.

Thanks for all the answers. It looks like I might be able to get some funding for my ATP through the WIA. I have a few meetings with the unemployment next week. Not sure if I will get it or how long it will take to get approved, but I'd take the written again if I would get a free ATP out of it ;)
