Popped the slides to avoid DOT 3...I just don't understand how they couldn't have gotten a temp gate or even some air stairs at LAS.

I don't remember the per person fine, but its a lot more than repacking the slide.
Back in the day, waiting for Mx to bring over our bird after a 14-day check, saying WTF... We learned they popped the slide in the hangar. I think the cost to repack it, was around $2-4000. Pretty measly compared to the DOT 3hr fine.
As for Compass incident. wow... that's dumb beyond measure. Dispatch can declare an emergency for you, but you have to be some kind of stupid to listen to that logic.

Yep. Its around 4k or so to repack it. I know a genius that decided to pull one and use it as a slide near a gate.... he no longer works for that airline...
