ATC clearances via deatalink

Any of you 121 folks issued ATC clearances from departure to enroute to destination terminal via datalink? A presentation at the NASA hosted aviation symposium got me thinking.

The system is fully functional but what was not clear if it's yet operational for 121 aircraft.

Nope.

Let me rephrase. We get PDC via ACARS, which is our IFR clearance. However they do not issue clearances via ACARS.

If you're talking about IFR clearances, yes.

CPDLC, for airborne operations, no. There are some over water and FANS route only, as far as I know.

What do CPLDC and FANS stand for so I may google them.

CPDLC - Controller Pilot Data Link Clearance

FANS - Future Air Navigation Service (?)

I'll have to check our books next time I fly to be sure.

Thanks, C150. I got the feeling the system designed by a team did not anticipate certain PIC actions. It's a work in progress. But that only covered the en route phase.

Now that I now what I'm looking for I'll search for datalink in terminal area.

We get CPDLC clearances over the ocean. Oceanic clearance requests and LDC over ACARS.

Some countries are CPDLC-capable but we (the royal we) aren't authorized to utilize it yet.

Does your airline or other US flagged carriers have an anticipation date?

Whenever the FAA gets the money and overcomes inertia to implement it. However, they need to placate the anti-"Line up and wait" contingent first before forcing them to accept any more ICAO standard stuff:rolleyes:

That's probably the best answer on the wide wide world of net.
