Anybody still using them for IFR training? I remember 20 years ago I flew one and thought it was a pretty nice sim. Know the rules have changed a lot since then. Just wonder if anyone is using them in flight schools anymore?
 
The flight school I work for has one, but it's completely inop.

It was used until some time late 2010, when something in the electronics failed, and the simulator could no longer "take off". After it was discovered that getting the thing fixed would be amazingly difficult (there was maybe one person in the state who knew how to repair it), the owner just spent the money on a newer X-plane based simulator and left the AST-300 as a room-sized paperweight.
 
AST has a digit retrofit package based on XPlane which for the AST-300 which runs about $25,000... not bad compared to the cost of many new sims.

That's probably the one on ebay...haha. Yeah, 25K is a bit rich for what I want to do. Thanks for the info.
 
Just flew ours yesterday for CfII training! If you can fly that thing you can fly instruments in any airplane...
 
I just got checked out to teach in an AST-300 the other day. if you can "fly" an ILS in it, flying the same ILS in the actual airplane is a piece of cake. it's worth mentioning that this is the first sim I've ever used that the trim controls actually work. Work load is fairly high, but not nearly as bad as hand-flying MS-Flight Simulator with just a joystick and keyboard
 
I've got about 25 hours in one about a year ago. It was running x-plane and had a KLN 89 and an aspen like PFD. The school had 3 of them. Great sims!
