Asiana Cargo 747-400 Accident

Unfortunately looks like both pilots were killed in the crash, which happened on a flight from Incheon to Shanghai.

"Asiana officials got a report early Thursday morning from the pilot that the Boeing 747, which was southwest of the southern resort island, was having mechanical difficulties and would try to make its way to the island's airport, Jason Kim, a spokesman for Asiana Airlines, said."

You got to it before I did. I turned on the TV and this is immediately what I saw this morning. Very tragic and with the downpour of rains happening here, it doesn't look good for people trying to get out!

Not a peep over here that I've seen. 1,000,000 lbs aircraft reports mechanical difficulties and disappears...nothin. RJ blows a tire and it's front page news.

This crash I think may also have not just been mechanical, but the weather here isn't exactly the best either. South Korea has received almost half their yearly rainfall in 3 days, and high winds are threatening to shut down Incheon Intl.

The transport ministry said in a statement the plane carrying a pilot and a co-pilot was believed to have caught fire in flight, but the circumstances could not be confirmed until the recovery of its flight data recorder.

The pilot radioed Chinese air traffic controllers in Shanghai that fire had broken out in the hold and that the plane had to divert to Jeju, a transport ministry official said.

"A Korean Air passenger flight picked up this message and alerted South Korean air control authorities," assistant director Park Joo-Hwan told AFP.

Presuming this turns out to be accurate, maybe it's time for slightly more Draconian measures regarding hazmats, etc? I remember at least three times flying freight that some bozo dropped the box and it suddenly started leaking what appeared to be liquid plutonium (no markings on the package). The load sup of course just sent it back in to the sort for uh "processing". Now, maybe it turns out the plane broke, and I'm not quite pointing fingers yet, but if this turns out to be yet another "inexplicable fire in cargo area of cargo aircraft" it's time for some expletive deleteds to be charged with manslaughter and their little fly-by-night shipping departments, too. Fines just make the jerkoffs look at the bottom line and shrug. Jail time for the guy in charge ought to be the order of the day.

Definitely watching this one closely. Since no one in the US is really carrying Lithium batteries anymore we are carrying TONS of them on every flight. I hope this isn't another battery incident. RIP to the crew.

It is always in the back of my mind flying freight thats for damn sure. RIP to the crew that is very unfortunate.

Assuming it was even as a result as dangerous goods, we do not know if they were declared or not, if they were even required to be declared, etc. If it was from Li batteries, and the quantities were small (like in electronic goods) there is pretty much no way to stop it. They are in virtually everything, from virtually every checked bag on a pax carrier to every electronic item shipped as freight. How do you propose to stop that?

Fire huh? RIP, hopefully we learn something from their deaths that saves lives down the road. I guess that's all you can hope for after a terrible accident. :(
