ASA Recalls All?

According to DD (who apparently talked to SH about it), looks like only 40 will be recalled. Since only 40 of 56 accepted. Such BS. I'm convinced they use a magic 8 ball over in A-Tech to determine their staffing needs.

That sucks, how hard would it be to send out two more letters?

Looks like 40 accepted and 16 bypassed. Hopefully management sends out at least two more letters and a couple of the February furloughs can come back!

Looks like quite a few furloughs aren't thrilled with the idea of commutting to reserve in IAD, where you do plenty of Ready Reserve when the TDYs are out flying high credit trips and ending the month with 85hrs + credit and massive amounts of per diem money. It's not fun. Can't wait for Sept

Kinda comical how they say they're recalling 42, fail to get 42 to come back, and they're like "Okay, fine. . .only 40."

How dare we bring back any of the Acey 80, lol. Even if it is 2, having to send out 10 notices only to get two back.

I'm pretty convinced that our crew planning department has no freakin clue what is going on. Since I've been here we've always been way overstaffed or really short, never anything anywhere near normal. It can vary by plane to plane too, which you would think would be an easy fix, but no they just like to stick their head in the sand.

Skywest lack of staffing, and ASA being fat??? If so bravo Skywest for looking out for their whole pilot group.

If that's why they're doing it I bet it has nothing to do with the pilot group and everything to do with saving money by not having to hire more at skywest....if the airplanes are even coming from there...or at all.

Im guessing the company decided its not worth it to run just 2 of the Acey 80 thru the full training program. You guys do have to do the whole thing including indoctrination right?

Looks like the planes were never re-registered when sent to SKW. Planes still coming from QX

I have the 18+ month inactive training outline at home, but something like that.

Condensed INDOC
Condensed GENOPS
Full CPT
Full SIM
Full IOE
(Differences CPT)
(Differences SIM)
(Differences IOE)

You may be right though. Certainly seems logical.

Company is afraid they won't get their return on their investment on the two guys (or girls) who they have to send through the full training program AGAIN, when they can wait to send a class of twelve through it AGAIN.

It was, afterall, the company's decision to send 136 guys to the street.

Cost of doing business.

Pay now - twice, or pay later - twice.

As I said earlier, there has been NO OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT from QX regarding these aircraft, other than to say "There have been talks about them, nothing more...nothing less". I just checked the company website and called some friends in operations at PDX...nothing more to see here folks, you can all go home now.

This would be a very big announcement for Horizon, seeing as how QX has no more Q400 deliveries scheduled for this year. So loosing 4 aircraft with no replacements could mean more furloughs.

BUT, ASA is getting "new" planes...and they're going to fly them to all 50 states...AWESOME! (Huge Sarcasm Tag here)

Trip7 has made it pretty obvious that he doesn't need an announcement for something to be official :-P

That being said, when bad stuff like losing airplanes happens, companies don't usually make a bunch of announcements leading up to it, it just suddenly happens one day. That's how the furloughs were here. "Good" things get announcements, bad things seemingly come out of nowhere.

Shoot didn't realize Horizon is still flying the 700s no wonder why you're so emotional about this. Thought they were already all Q400 with 700s parked.

So I've noticed...alittle too much koolaid for me...

Unfortunately, Horizon has made it pretty well known that it is going to be a Q400-only operation. Getting rid of the CRJ700 is pretty much the top priority, other than dragging our the pilot's contract and doing everything possible to be a horses ass to the pilots.

They were compelled enough to put a posting on the company website regarding the 700's.

Here's the post from 3 June 2010 on the website:
"Yesterday, Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA), a subsidiary of SkyWest Inc., announced that it is adding four CRJ-700s to its fleet. Given that Horizon has been remarketing its regional jets, this has led to speculation that Horizon will be providing ASA with those aircraft.

The fact is Horizon was approached by ASA and both airlines are in discussions, but a deal has not been finalized. Horizon doesn’t comment publicly on outstanding negotiations, so no other specifics can be shared at this time. If the negotiations conclude successfully, the news will be promptly communicated to all employees.

Horizon currently has 57 aircraft in its fleet, 17 of these CRJ-700s. Horizon remains committed to arriving at an all-Q400 fleet, because of the aircraft's fuel efficiency and the huge annual cost savings gained through the resulting simplicity and lack of duplication."

Horizon still has 17 aircraft, 3 are sub-leased and flying in South Africa.

It's pretty much consensus that the "Error Group" (Alaska Air Group) is being very short-sighted with the movement of the 700's.

Right now there is a gap between 70-76 seat (700 and Q4) and 110 seat (737-700). If you get rid of the 700's and start to deploy the Q4 on it's runs, you are going to have flights in excess of 3 hours.

The 700's should be kept in the fleet and used to start new markets, or increase competition on certain routes. Take Boise to Phoenix for example, it's full most of the time on US Airways...if you want to fly Alaska/Horizon there, you have to back track to Portland or Seattle. Why not put a 700 on it and take some of the business, Boise has been a very good city to Alaska/Horizon, lots of MVP and MVP/Golds.

My worry is that after the 700's are gone, Alaska will sub out for E-190's or CRJ900's because "Horizon is too expensive and needs to have pilot pay scales more in line with Colgan/Lynx/Mesa/TSA/Etc".

Yeah, kind of bass ackwards that every other airline out there is saying that 700/900s are the future and Horizon is saying "nah, that's ok".

That's why we call them the "Error Group", they'll see a $100 on the other side of the street, but pick up the $10 bill on the side they're on...because it requires less effort on their part.

I'd like to see Horizon start putting some sort of "First Class" in the CRJ700, ala Eagle/United Express/Delta Connection...instead of feed pax the BS line of "It's all First Class on Horizon".

Horizon has a great product, better than alot of Major's...but you can only polish a turd so much.

I love the Q400...flew it for 1500 hours at Horizon, but it's suited for a certain market. It's not suited for PacNW to SoCal/Arizona/Vegas non-stop.

2 hours is about the max that most people want to be stuck on a turboprop, no matter how comfortable it is...that's just the facts of the matter.

The dumbest thing they have done was close the crew base here.

Ugh, George Bagley (idiot) shut Boise down because the Horizon pilot's were voting in an union (a union?).

It's pretty well known that he went into the crew base at BOI and started raisin' all kinds of hell at the pilots.

Jesus, don't give them any ideas. Buy out Alaska, then make Skywest Republic 2.0? Yeah, that's the LAST thing we need. I can already see the glazed eyes of all the shiny jet guys over there when they find out they could fly a 737. Nevermind the fact it's for peanuts, d00d! It's a 737!!!

While I'm not saying that it would never happen, SkyWest has made it very clear through numerous communications that they are not interested in going the route that Republic has taken. They are focused on being the regional lift of choice, so a purchase of Horizon Air makes a lot more sense than a purchase of Alaska. Management has stated that they are always in pursuit of additional partners and expanding existing relationships, which I take to mean trying to get in with either Airways, a LCC, or Alaska.

I'm not typically one to post company email, but I think this one from the chief pilot worthwhile:

There continues to be activity at Atlantic Southeast and I am advising you to keep your bypass form update if you don’t want to return in the near future and make sure we have the correct address on file.

There is a STRONG possibility that we may mail out additional recall letters to some of the 80 pilots in the February furlough group. My advice is that you start thinking about your answer to a recall notice.

I will communicate more as it becomes available. Have a good weekend.
