Hey forum, as I am making my way through the ASA manual I came across a rule concerning supplemental O2. Can anyone tell me, from the rule below, why only 10% of the passengers would be provided O2 and not all of them?

"For flight in a reciprocating-engine-powered airplanes, at cabin pressure altitudes above 8,000 feet, up to and including 14,000 feet, each certificate holder shall provide enough oxygen for 30 minutes for 10% of the passengers"

- 14 CFR Part 121.327

Probably because air at 14k is breathable but a small percentage such as young and elderly may have difficulty with the the low oxygen concentration at that altitude

Exactly..! Apparently pistons still do the trick. And the O2 is for the Panic when the pax see those tiny little pro-pellers.

I know of a certain carrier (cough, cough, RYN, cough) out there where the Chief Pilot actually stated that supplemental O2 was not required under Part 121.

Would this be the same member of a management group that for a few minutes actually contemplated a single engine ferry?

This guy needs to be working at my operation with the rest of us renegades... And no, that's not necessarily a compliment or a good thing.

...And this is what the conversation has turned to. I left it in the hands of experts and I get a renegade pilot, panic stricken passengers with no O2, and a woefully nervous ADX student seeking guidance from industry leaders with only one plausible answer...

I think I'm home...

But---giving passengers oxygen sounds really expensive, and additional expenses could cut into upper mangement's bonus checks for this quarter!

Won't you please think of the executives?!
