Artificial Limbs...

Ed Homer was a double amputee who flew for Ealge and did the flow through to AA. He lost both of his legs below the knee as a result of a sight-seeing crash on Mt. McKinley in 1976. He was one of two survivors of their party of four.

He was a great guy. I flew with him many times. He continued to be an avid mountain climber, an inspiration to amputees and non-amputees everywhere. He was killed when he returned to Mt. McKinley a couple years ago, struck on the head by a falling boulder and died instantly.

It's always awesome to see people overcome obstacles and continue with their life after an accident. While some whine and complain about life, others live it.

There was a United States Marine that made history when he served in combat after losing a leg in a parachute jump. Force Recon Marine...it had never been done before.

Inspiring, for sure.

I think that's awesome. Good on the AF for not giving the dude the shaft. It'll be interesting to see if he ends up at a Pt 121 carrier after he retires.

There's a bloke here in the Oz army flying Super King Airs for 1st Avn Regt who lost both legs in an ultralight crash. I think he also flew Blackhawks after his prang. He had to jump over the physical hurdles as well as the inevitable institutional bias.

Folks like this have great role models, though .... Sir Douglas Bader lost both legs in an aerobatics prang in the 1930s. That didn't stop him claiming 29 air-air victories during WWII, though, and attempting multiple escape attempts after he was shot down and taken POW.
