I know there are some of you PUBNAT1'ers that are through the academy. Any one care to elaborate as to what happens after arriving at your facility?

What kind of material you learning?

When do you start your D-Sides?

When do you start working nights/weekends?

When are you able to take vacation?

Are you able to pick which area you want to work in?

How bad/good do the CPC's treat ya?

Anything you would've done different?

....and anything else you might want to add :)

Alright here is what happened with ZOB.

1. We were given 5-6 weeks to learn map information and complete around 20 Computer Based Instruction modules. With the maps we took them in stages, First navaids, then navaid locations (high), jet routes, low navaid locations, victor airways, area high, area low. It was all self paced.

2. D side training is starting around 3 months after people are arriving to the facility.

3. Depends, during our maps we were M-F 7-3:30. Now the different areas assigned different schedules. Half are on a M-F with some days some nights, the other ones have tuesday wednesday, monday tuesday weekends etc...

4. Vacation, they don't care much while your sitting around waiting for D-sides, but you CANNOT take vacation during your D-class or R-class, which the D is 6 weeks for us, not sure about the R.

5. We were able to pick our area, but once again this was ZOB.

6. Everyone wants you to succeed, the CPC's are helpful especially the old guys.

My husband has had about the same experience. His only difference is he is now on shift work while everyone that is certified goes through ERAM training. He will start his D-side class (17 weeks) in August.

Shift work depends on the area you are in but it is very unlikely you will work Sundays (cause of the 25% differential). My husband works 1 week nights, 1 week days. Others are working 2 days 3 night. None of them have been assigned the graveyard (10:00-6:00) shift.

My husband keeps in contact with some from his OKC class. None of them picked their areas, they had an area assigned to them when they got to the facility.

The first few weeks will be learning maps (much harder than OKC maps). Your days are spent studying and as of right now my husband has a test daily on maps and airport codes.
