Army retires the Kiowa Warrior

64 will never....NEVER go to the swoopy guys. It's not a new idea and had been addressed many a time. Two problems.....mobility and maintenance

I don't buy the Maintenance excuse. If they can maintain a 47G with all the mission systems on that things minimum launch criteria an D/E model Apache isn't a stretch.

The last eval they did of the platform involved A models which didn't have anywhere near the OR rate we've generated in Afghanistan or Iraq. Mobility is no different than a Hawk. Only if Task Force owned them they'd probably have the mooring lugs and blade fold kits 1/aircraft as an MTOE rather than the rest of the Army sharing the small number that bounce between units for deployment.

That said we can't do what the AH-6 does, but they can't do some of the stuff we do either.

End of the day I don't see them giving up what they have because what they have works for them. They only use us because there are 4 battalions of assault aviation but only 1 has guns with AH/DAP. So as long as they continue to work in AOs where conventional aviation is co-located it's too easy to just demand the Joint Forces Commander apportion assets from the Land Component to support SOF.

Exactly, why worry about it. No daps or littles? Bet there's an apache company in ear shot. Put up the request

The funny thing is 15 years ago nobody would have thought that possible because simply put conventional aviation was not trained to be part of their mission set. Now days there is enough experience sprinkled around the 64 community that it's not a huge ordeal to get a platoon ready to support the swoops guys.

Even so though there is a huge gap between what we know and the total mission sets that side has vs conventional and some of the worst I've seen come from this exposure to the SOF mission in a relatively benign environment like Afghanistan is that people think conventional and SOF are interchangeable or that the difference in expectation of capes can be minimized. It's not, and that's clear when you actually get into the weeds with the hard mission sets.

Just make sure you tell every Apache drive that Firebirds is your favorite movie. :D

You can't say that word. The F-word is our word.

Actually had a 5 person participation conversation about who had that word on their hard drive for Sunday's "Bad 80s Movie Night" because our S4 had never seen it. Managed to go whole minutes and find who had it while never saying the F-word.

"But it's low Top Gun for the Army!!" Don't all CW2's drive old Vettes?

Re: the FB taboo -- I know. A buddy was threatened with getting recycled to a Blackhawk class if he ever mentioned that movie again. His IP was one of the pilots.

I had an IP who was visibly in the scene in the bar where they celebrate the dudes birthday with the most self centered tool of cake ever.

And after some extensive research I have found the replacement for the Army's whole rotary wing fleet.

Depending on the success of Top Gun 2 I'm going to write Nic about reprising the role of Jake Preston. If needed I can sneak into his home drag him to the LCT where I already have a Go-Pro mounted, zip tie him down, stick some bubbleicious in mouth and watch the cinematic magic happen. As far as the other actors go Tommy Lee Jones can be written off as dying of untreated syphilis, and my friends say if I whitened my teeth and grew my hair out a bit I look like Sean Young Scott, so I can cover that role if she isn't interested.

As far as the plot goes I'm sure we can cook something up about Drug Cartels buying surplus -58Ds through a shadow broker then teaming up with ISIS and North Korea for some cool reason. With ISIS/NK/Cartel flying -58s, fighter jets can't go slow enough to shoot them down and the Air Defense guys really don't have a decent SHORAD program and don't want to waste an expensive Patriot missile on a tiny little helicopter, so that leaves only you know who to save the day.
