Thank you everyone!
For those who are curious, I am/was a Airborne Infantryman in a LRSC in the ARNG. This was my third enlistment. I was very seriously considering entering DEP (the Delayed EXIT Program - my joke) and leaving the Infantry to become a pogue/fobbit aircraft structural repairer (MOS 15G), but decided to just get out instead. I was losing ~$15k/yr in the Guard, which I accepted without complaint for many years, but now I really want to spend more time with my family (and less time laying in the mud).
I was ARNG, but we are at war and I trained everyday on my own in some way, and would occasionally do extra training with the guys on my team between drill weekends. I viewed myself as a full-time warrior, not a part-time soldier. I think that is the right mentality for anyone considering combat arms. You need to be fit and you need to be proficient or you will need a funeral. War is not a part-time job and is not to be taken lightly.
I have no doubts that I will miss the the comraderie with guys on my Team and in my Company. I know I will miss jumping out of large transport category fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters at night with full combat equipment. There are lots of other things I will miss too, and some things that I won't, but I am 100% sure that this is the right thing for me and my family right now.
Will I be back? Not sure, but my Magic 8-Ball answers were, "Ask again later", and "Very doubtful". I think those are both very accurate.
I know I can be recalled for the next couple of years while I am in the IRR, but I'm not worried about it as there is no shortage of recruits. I do have a special skillset and am/was very good at my job, but the Company I left has lots of great guys that can easily fill my position on the Team.
I have seen and experienced things that I never would have been able to if I had not joined the Army. I am very thankful that I was given an opportunity to be a part of the most powerful fighting force this planet has ever seen. It has been my honor and privelege to have been able to serve this great Nation and it's citizens.
