Are you REALLY Unemployed?

Eh, if you aren't looking how can you be considered unemployed? You technically aren't a part of the workforce or even potential workforce material unless you are looking for a job. The best way to look at unemployment is from a standard that only includes the total workforce. There is a reason why economists use those numbers and politicians and organizations, such as the one with the video, will try to distort them.

I think you are missing the big picture here. Let me run this scenario by you:

You are a corporate pilot making 50k a year and you get laid off. You go on unemployment which pays 300-400 a week depending on where you live. You look and look for another job, any job paying what you were making. All you can find is a job at Wal-mart/Home Depo/Kroger paying 8-10 dollars an hour. You might get lucky and they offer you a full time gig. In the end you make whopping 400 a week for 40 hours of work. Why do this? Why not stop looking and live off the government tit for the same money doing absolutely nothing. I think they even extended benefits now for a total of 2 years! You could kick back with a beer and chill with Springer for 2 years! These are the people not looking, therefore not in the workforce. Eventually they will run out of G'ubment money, and be back in the system.

300-400 is the average maximum. That's what you get if you are married with dependants. I can tell you first hand in the state of illinois a single guy, with no dependants it's less than half of the 300 number your throwing around. Unemployment benefits around here only go for a maximum of 72 weeks.

In other states it is indeed possible to get the maximum amount of UI being single with no dependents.

So you are saying you should just live with the $400? Really? Keep looking, a better job than that will eventually pop up. The entire point of unemployment is to help till you get a job, not to waste tax money we don't have.

i think he was trying to say that it would be equally benificial and humiliating to be on unemployment or to have a McJob. So if that's the case, what is the motivation to get off the dole?
