Are there part time dispatchers?

Hey everyone,

I'd like to thank everyone for all the info from my earlier thread- I just had one last question about dispatching that was still on my mind. Is the industry conducive to part time careers? I tried doing some research and found that unions require some 6-3, 3-6 schedule at places like American and Southwest which doesn't seem to allow for any part time careers but are there people who are at majors (like United or Delta which are part of PAFCA?) or regionals who do work part time? If so, what do their schedules end up being? Sorry I'm so confused on this topic but I appreciate all the assistance you guys have given!

What does that mean? He took a pay cut to work less shifts?

Exactly. Many airlines allow you to trade away the pay for a percentage of days you work. I believe at my airline you can trade away 20% of your shifts or 376 hours per year.

So do majors generally allow people to trade an unlimited amount of hours? 376 hours per year is only a couple days per month, right?

I cannot think of a single place that offers part time dispatching unless its some podunk airline in BFE nowhere. You wont see it at any of the majors.

I am unaware of any 121 operator that hires dispatchers part time. Every shop I've worked at had no provisions for part time dispatchers in the contract.

You may find part time working for part 135 or Part 91 operators.

I think he was asking if a schedule would allow someone to work part time at another job.

I did it when I first started in this career. Of course it was a 4 on 4 off schedule which made it fairly easy.

It can be done but remember for those who do have a second job or those that are considering it, remember which job comes first and the things that are involved with it. Keepng sharp, getting enough rest, etc.

Exactly- I'm at a point where I feel like I have to decide between two of my passions that I've always been interested in pursuing: medicine and the airline industry. I thought it would be the sort of thing where I could work as a dispatcher one or two days a week and sometimes weekends (still following the same career path to a major and all) but, unfortunately, I'm learning that plan probably won't work

Yup! Re-read it and initially mis-read it. Good catch. Agreed, entirely possible to do so with most schedules, but watch out for burn-out. Two jobs sounds like fun until you do it for a year or so, and most times the money you can earn from picking up overtime FAR exceeds what you can get working a side job.

I worked as a paramedic part time when I first started dispatching. I worked a 4-3 schedule at a regional, then worked a 24 hour shift on one of my 3 days off. It can be done but it is hard to find a schedule that fits with the odd shifts dispatcher work.

Why would you want to work part time? This is a career you should be putting in a full times effort into. This isn't flipping burgers at the local whattaburger.

Where I work they have something that allows you and another dispatcher to share full time. You can't get hired at part time, though. As far as I know, it's the only place with a contract that allows that. Like another poster said, you could find that in 135 and 91 most likely, but I'm sure you could get that sort of hook up in an EMS OCC.
