This is very interesting. It sure would be fun to have your own 152 for a while. However, approximately how much cheaper is it to go this route if you want to go from instrument to MEI, and then sell the plane once you're done instructing?
I'm looking for the best deal (aren't we all). So far the best deal I've seen is Ari for $30K with 200 hours ME time. I can get the training at a local FBO for $26K, but it's only 45 hours of ME time. Does Plus One have a pro pilot program? I didn't see anything on their site.

I think buying your own plane is more economical right up to the point you start talking about multi-time. Multi-time is important and hard to get. I would think a guy could go pretty far with his own plane and then do the multi stuff at Skymates, or whatever. Remember, when you're done, you can sell the plane....if you want.
I figured keeping the plane for a year, year and a half and going from my private to Commercial with CFI would have run significant;y ;ess than $30,000. The only way it works out to be cheaper is if you are going to fly a lot. My breakeven point would have been right at 125 hours per year. That was with payment figured and maintenance reserve, fuel, oil, insurance(cheap on a a 150.) and tiedown plus a conservative $900 for an annual.
If you are a member of AOPA, they have a cost calulator that will help you figure your hourly cost assuming you do no preventive maintenance yourself. This route will work assuming you have the credit and the upfront money you will need to buy the plane. You will need 10 - 20% for the bank note and you will want a thousand for a prepurchase inspection. Might as well just have an annual done for the inspection then you have a year to fly it. I was recommended to buy a 70's 150. Not a 152 as the 28V electrical system is a piece of crap that has caused a lot of AD's and also costs more to work on. 1973-1977 I think were the years to look at. Keep in mind that the useful load of a 150 is pretty low. If you weight around 170 you should be fine though. I pushing 220 would never have been able to fly with full fuel with a normal sized person.

It can be difficult to find ME customers and build that time if you're working for an FBO. It's kind of a crapshoot from what I understand. It's probably best if you can instruct for ATP, Ari, Skymates, etc. I look forward to instructing, but I don't want to earn $15K a year for longer than I have to.

Plus One is just a flying club with good wet rates and a good size pool of good freelance instructors. You wanted "affordable" and since you still want very good instruction, I thought I'd throw it in there as an option. Strictly Part 61 between you and the instructor... no "program." Did you take a look at the list of club instructors and their qualifcations by any chance?

Plus a lot of insurance companies require you to have a 100 hrs multi time before you can Multi instruct. I don't know what in the world I am going to do to get 79 hrs multi time. But I know one thing, I'm damn sure not paying for it.
