Apparently I'm a felon.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, we still know it's not a felony.

Texaspilot: I would love to take this thing to court, but I'm afraid I spent all my money beating the Reckless charge (even sold my 500hp pride and joy to pay attorney/court fees), and I'm working on a pretty short timeline as this may push Marine BCT a month nearer. Also, I think the money saved by driving slower than 80 in a 70 is going to be negligible.

JEP: I thought the same way you did once I got my deferral: "Why risk it?" But with my entire family in full-time jobs, I had to find reliable transportation to school and work. I drove a moped for awhile to stay under the radar but I had to drive an hour north for a Geology field trip yesterday, and the moped didn't seem like a favorable candidate for 70 mph freeways, so I drove my brother's Jeep.

tonyw: Here's what's with people asking questions about whether or not a felony or misdemeanor conviction will kill their chances of getting hired by an airline: They want to know.

FiveO: I mentioned already that I will have neither the time nor the money to fight this, but for the record, what angle would seem best to play given my situation? If you want to know my situation, I posted it in some legal forums here: http://forum.freeadvice.com/showthread.php?t=322280

Okay buddy keep telling yourself that. I hope one day you need some form of help, and maybe it arrives a little late cause we are out being lame and screwing people. Oh wait, thats all we do. Than maybe you would appreciate a cop. Tool.

In his defense, how does a speeding ticket help society as a whole?

Chipdouglas, your best bet is to take it to court. PM me if you need any help. I will gladly help you out.

FiveO,

I received a ticket for 15 over driving my 9 month pregnant wife to Dr.'s with abdominal pain. The cop took my info and said he didn't want to delay me and mailed me the ticket. Had to get a lawyer and go to court to get out of it. I love it when I called the lawer and started to explain and he says let me gues is was officer xyz.

Oh well, there's always one bad apple to give everyone a bad name.

whatever happens when you go to an airline interview dont try to hide it or dismiss it as petty. tell them exactly what happened and what you learned from the experience. even if you do get it removed from your record it is still going to show up on an extensive background check and if you have tried to hide the fact then when they find it you will be screwed. anyway thats my two cents for whatever its worth

Chris, no where did I say that a speeding ticket helps society other than the fact it would be nice for them to slow down. And yes, Bandit Driver is right. It does help with funding.

Bandit Driver, that is a problem with lots of LE officers. You have Robo-Cop who gives everyone hell, and gives us all a bad name. Whenever I do pull someone over, I know after the first 30 seconds what the outcome will be. If they are immediately hostile towards me, that is going to set the tone. Once Im pissed, the more they talk the more I write. More times than not, the person admits to speeding, they apologize, and I send them on their way with a warning. Ive been trying to get the general assumption of a cop being an ass out of the picture. People need to keep in mind that their attitude is going to say it all. When you have one decent experience with a LE officer, hopefully it changes your overall opinion of LE in general.

The cop you had the pleasure of meeting was probably Rambo of some sort. In his defense, it he wanted to be a huge ass, he could have kept you there while he wrote the ticket. I know plenty of guys who would have done so. Would I ever do that.... um no.

You guys aren't out screwing people - you're sitting at speedtraps!:p

Let him try I would have made him call an ambulance then.

HA! This is why I love this forum.

Anyway, if I offended you, I'm sorry. You must admit, there are a lot of useless cops that tend to do nothing but create hassles and revenue for a small town.

My cop encounters:

1. Outrageous 4-wheeler cop claiming I was going at least 50mph on a campground...I was going at the fastest 25mph, probably just 20. The judge rolled her eyes when she read the ticket and recognized officer camp patrol. She dismissed the ticket.

2. Just outside of Amarillo, a cop pulls over the guy in front of me, then races out of his vehicle into the middle of the road and forces me to pull over also. Why? 81 in a 70. 6hrs of defensive driving and more than 100 bucks in court fees.

3. Following a caravan en route to a bicycle race in Wichita Falls. First thing the cop says, "I could have pulled over any of those cars." All right, why the f*** me then? Speed: again, 81 in a 70. Fine: 250 bucks.

I respect the real cops out there that actually deal with criminals. The 3 that screwwed me to raise some money and pass the time are a different story...

Ahahahha. We do most during the midnight shifts cause it helps us stay awake.

Plus, isn't that the time where the people who are speeding may very well be drunk off their butts?

81 in a 71 is Speeding. Anything more than 5 MPH over the limit and you start to push your luck, 10 is definatly pushing. Your Speeding! so how does that make them useless? None the less you didnt learn the first time.

A sense of personal responsibility is actually a higher level human trait. Not everyone has it.

Feel free to interpret that as best fits your own world view.

I need another beer. I'm not my usual sanguine self.

Most cops I know roll their eyes whenever I get into the "proportions" argument, but it usually works in court if what you were doing isn't too outrageous. I got out of such a ticket a few years back (76 in a 70--don't try to tell me that's not outrageous). I argued that even if I were going 80 in that 70, that's a 14.3% infraction. I asked if they would have ticketed somebody for 40 in a 35--an exactly proportionate, 14.3% infraction--which no reasonable cop would do. In the absence of any reason for why a 14.3% infraction is so much more dangerous in a 70 mph zone than it is in a 35 mph zone, the ticket was dropped.

One ticket I got just not paying attention while going downhill on a campground, and the other two I got for keeping up with traffic. I'll just have to slow down and make everyone pass me I guess...

Which is actually what I've done since my third and hopefully last ticket ever, but not because I think the cops are right and I've been endangering the public, but because my car gets a good 5mph better when I slow things down to 60/65! So everyone should join the dorks and the grandmas out there, slow down to the speed limit or less, and help bring fuel costs down, thus helping the airlines and even my rental rates, reducing our dependance on foreign oil, and saving America! So I guess speeding really does endanger the public by funding terrorist networks vicariously through OPEC.

Speaking of "proportions," I wonder what proportion of threads on this site end up on tangents before the end of page 1?

The bottom line is this -- don't do the crime if you can't do the time. If you don't want to pay a fine for speeding and get nailed for reckless driving, don't speed and don't drive recklessly.

Actions have consequences. If you want to speed, be my guest, but don't complain about unfair cops when you get busted. Laws are laws, whether or not you like them.

From the sound of this thread, we have a lot of speeders...I've had 2 tickets in my life: one at 16 outside my hight school: 25 in a 20 (school zone) and my last ticket was at 17 years old: 67 in a 55...the sad part was it was a person passing me on the right side that his radar caught. Oh well, Defensive Driving and it was wiped off. Now, 16 year later... and still have a nice clean record.

Learn how to speed better people!!!

Class A or B Misdemeanors with a fine > $299 within 5 years is a no-go at Skywest. They won't hire you because of some Canadian regulations about those with misdemeanors. The Canadians won't let you in the country. If it's 5-10 years ago, you need to go through some sort of paperwork rig-a-marole with Canadian immigration (which, I hear, is not cheap, and out of your pocket).

Regarding Canada regs:

"* Special Note to Pilot Applicants

Canadian Law prohibits an individual who has been convicted of a DUI/DWI within the last 10 years from entering or exiting Canada. Special paperwork must be obtained through the Canadian Consulate so that a waiver may be obtained. This waiver must be obtained prior to our airline interview."

From Pinnacle's web site. I believe what Chris is referring to is the DUI stuff. Skywest may have a harsher policy in place internally, however.

I think you'd be surprised how many pilots have misdemeanors. I personally had 3 tickets and a suspended license on my record when hired.
