So here is the deal. I went in for my first class medical 2 days ago. I have been under a ton of stress. I was moving, taking a new job, going through a divorce, custody case and some family issues. I was told during my medical that I have 20/30 vision in my left eye. I told him that I could read all of the line but one letter. I got a little heated with the examiner, telling him I wanted a refund and that I have never had to strip down to my underwear for a physical. I was given my money back and then went to another AME. He tested my vision and said I was ok, but on the border of needing glasses. He wanted to finish my exam and couldn't because I was "Differed" by the last AME. I called the medical board and all they would tell me is I needed glasses. I called the second AME back and he said that I was differed for "Anger issues". I don't know how one small angry rant can put me in this situation. I then proceeded to call the first AME and tell him I was sorry and Paid him back for the medical work done.I owned up to it and tried to fix my mistake. The damage was already done however. My DO knows one of the medical board members personally and I talked to him today. He stated that this could take longer than he thought to fix. The problem being is my current job has threatened to let me go if I do not have my medical within 2 weeks. This AME was mad at me because I didn't agree with him and has a very good chance to ruin my career. I have to say I'm frightened of what might happen. Any input of what I should do here? As I stated, I apologized personally to all parties involved. And have an AME trying to help me out.

I got upset because he stated I was "fat and blind" I have 20/30 in one eye and I am just 15lbs overweight. He was extremely rude. I've thought about a lawsuit.

Hell, there's one guy in town here who still has you turn your head and cough and bend over the table. Lot's of things piss me off, an • AME ain't one.

I probably would have been mad, too. Stripping down for a medical is unheard of. If your AME is making you do it, you should find a new one.

Have none of you ever been upset that going in for a medical is a routine physical, yet the AME won't take your insurance and usually requires cash or check. That's enough for me to be diagnosed with an anger issue.

Because it is not covered by insurance?

A routine physical is usually the cheapest thing you can do with health insurance. I think it's a $20 co-pay for me. An aviation medical from an AME is $150 minimum cash or check. Just seems like a racket.

Mine last month was $100 for a first. The FAA sets the maximum that specialists like AMEs and DPEs can charge.

I don't know about you, but my career is worth way more than $150.00 per year.

1) The FAA does not set any standards for the charge for a flight physical. That is more of a community standard.
2) Insurance does not pay for flight physicals because the billing code is different than a routine physical. The AME cannot falsify the code or they lose their license for fraud.
3) Becoming angry and storming out of the office indicates a probable lack of ability to handle stress well. That may be an issue in the cockpit and is something the FAA wants AME's to observe.
4) When you start a medical in one office and leave, the AME is obligated to transmit the medical to the FAA as deferred for failure to complete. This automatically flags your file and the next AME is warned in the FAA computer system to not issue a medical.
5) I would suspect the FAA will ask for a psychiatric evaluation before considering a medical certificate.

Wow! Who gets angry with an AME? Just get glasses and move on...

My student who found out from the AME he had diabetes, and decided the senior AME had mistreated him and went back to pound on the guys desk and demand his medical....

Next time research the AME you're going to. Don't just hop online and find the closest one.
