AOA Recommendation

Lets just mask the problem of people's inability to control the aircraft at slow speeds. Instead of putting extra emphasis on it in Flight reviews , just stick an AOA indicator on the plane and call it good.

Jokes aside, this is a good move on the part of the FAA not just because of the benefits of this specific system but also because it signals a willingness to make new safety tech more easily available.

This my friend is the real victory! Great observation. I've been following this a very very very long time. It's long over due. So many lives in various situations could have been saved had this been done over a decade ago.

Ignoring the comments of "macho aviators" sitting in a modern flight deck with all sorts of nice technology and safety gadgets he/she did not pay for, who fail to see the real victory in having this policy change- beyond a simple "AOA Indicator".

The F-4 probably had the best AOA system of any aircraft, certainly any plane that I have flown. It had visual indications but even better it had an aural tone indicator. A couple of ex F-4 guys are developing that system for experimental airplanes. Here is a vid of a demonstration in an RV-4:

I have an AOA system in my RV-8 located on my EFIS and is quite useless by not being in my field of vision.

That's interesting, I saw a presentation last year at Oshkosh, that reported on several different AOA systems that were in development, and what struck me was that there was no standardization on how to display AOA information.

A crutch for what?

For not just flying the damn airplane. It's a very useful tool to have. But unless it's in your field of vision when you're making that steep descending turn, trying to spot the runway under the wing, it's useless.

But here comes the debate...
