Anyone use an FAA inspector instead of a D.E.?

I've heard it's much harder, that's about it. I guess the money is worth it since a lot of people are using DEs.

On your checkride?

Any difference?

If it can save me a few hundred dollars that would be great.

I used them on a couple rides. It is pretty hard to schedule an inspector. That is about the only difference I noticed. Overall it saved me around $1500 not including the CFI intial.

I think its easier in a way because I have never had an inspector deviate from the PTS. I cannot say the same for all DPE's.

The only checkrides that you'll have a chance with are the CFI ones. Otherwise, inspectors are usually too busy to do Privates or Instruments. The only exception is when they have to do a certain number of "ride alongs" with new DPE hires, but even then they cannot technically ask you any questions.

The CFI initial though, there's your chance. It saved me about $400 to use a FSDO. I found the ride fair and actually pretty easy, although the fail rate is quite high.

When you call a field office, specifically ask to schedule a time for an inspector. Inspectors are told that if they cannot accommodate you within two weeks of your desired date, then they have to pass you along to a DPE.

go with the FAA if you can. theyre a little more thorough than a DPE for the most part, but just as fair as the PTS. My best check ride was my CFI initial with the FAA.
