Anyone hear about a DAL engine failure on takeoff in ORD?

My Dad had 4 enigine failures in his career with UAL. All from geese two out of BOS and two out of JFK. This was all within 3 years when that area was experiencing unusually high volumes of bird migrations in the late 80s. I think it finally led to them employing those falcons to patrol the area. Seems to have worked. Anyone know if they still do this up there? Great job Doug :rawk:

I've got to ask... what is up with the walrus?

Inside joke. Matt told a joke when Doug,Kristie, myself and Andrew met up with him last Saturday. Maybe he will tell the joke as he knows it better then I.

Was there a big bang? Right at V1?

The closest I've come was on an Air Canada 747-400 out of FRA to YVR. I was in business class and at about 100 knots there was a pretty good bang followed by vibration. I thought it was a tire. We taxied back in and it turned out in was a contained engine failure.

Don - it was a good thing they had you onboard. If you had not started drinking the beer, eating the peanuts, etc - the plane would not have been able to stop in time.

You saved the day! :) :) :) :)

I'll ask my Dad, since he gets the paper daily and informs me of all aviation related news. ;)

Your dad does that, too, eh? I get all the ones with quotes by Kit Darby. I tried telling him, once, but now I just take them and toss them once I see Kit's name attached.

That's kinda cool y'all get the day to unwind after that happened. I was riding in one of our Lears going home, lost an engine in cruise, the crew did an awesome job (the Captain is #1 seniority-wise here, with around 25000 hours, and it was his first engine failure, the FO had just upgraded, first week in the Lear). We diverted to CLT, picked up another plane and kept going, since they were almost out of duty time. Total time on the ground, including phone calls, etc. was under 1 hour, to reload all cargo, etc.

Glad to hear it all worked out for y'all!!
