Anyone else turn down a PEPC for a local interview?

I was offered a PEPC at LA, New York, or Memphis. I can't afford the plane ticket, so I opted for an interview close to home. Has anyone else done likewise? If so, has anyone had their interview yet or heard when it will be?

For those who have had the interview already, what should I expect?

most people i know have gone the pepc route because its much faster...dont know any who have gone the old route

Well, I went the old route because that was the only route available to me. I interviewed in January of this year and my physical, etc was about a month or so later. Though it seems like the process has sped up quite a bit recently.

Geeze, the interview was mostly me being asked questions about why I think I would be a good ATC and how I handle pressure/stress, what I do at home after a stressful day, how my old jobs applied to ATC, etc. Though it's been 6 months, so I'm sure I've forgotten something.

Do you remember about how long the interview (the questions) lasted?

I did the interview at Salt Lake Center near my home, which is the center I was selected by. As for the interview, don't sweat it. It is a standard government interview. Mine was 15 minutes long and concluded with a quick tour of ZLC. Then the fun begins-I waited and waited and never received a tentative offer letter, or any of the paperwork even though I was referred by the interviewer. I called and called OKC and finally decided to try and attend the PEPC in LA June 16 to expedite this slowest of slow processes. So, that is what I am going to do, and hopefully speed the process up. My advice is get to a PEPC or prepare to wait several months.

It would have been good for me to mention that the interview was 2 months ago. That may give you an idea of the timeline. Anyway, should have said that in the first post.

Former controller and interviewed with former supervisor which went well.
About 4 mo. later offered position but turned down because of location and
low starting salary.

Thanks a lot guys for the information! I'll keep everyone posted on the non-PEPC process for those of you out there who might choose this option when the time comes for you. I really wish they had a PEPC closer to MN, but maybe this is for the best for me since I have my house to sell in this wonderful market.:banghead:

Applied 05/2007
AT/SAT 3/10/2008
ASAP info/score sent to selection panel 4/08/2008
Invited to PEPC 5/22/2008

15 minute interview? Nice...Mine was closer to 45 minutes, but it also concluded with a nice tour of the facility :) It wasn't anything too stressful. Just think before you speak and you'll be fine!

I'm going through the process now. Believe me, you better be patient. With the influx of applicants and openings, the process is pretty slow. I turned down a PEPC in March, got an interview May 6, and finally got my tentative offer today. Now I have to schedule a million appointments and fill out a bunch of paperwork within 10 days while still waiting on the rest of my packet of stuff to fill out. Probably gonna be 2 months before I even get an academy date.

If I could have gone to the PEPC, god I would have. There is a girl in my ATC Squadron in my guard unit that went to the PEPC in Chicago May 23rd and ALREADY has a class date.

If you can go to a PEPC, I would highly recommend it. The PEPC people seem to have priority even though I'm VRA.

I was contacted a month ago for Texas and given the option of three PEPC in june and july. I decided to interview near my home in Salt Lake City becuase I am in no rush as my wife is about 8 months pregnant and didnt want to fork out the money for a plane ticket and hotel room. That said i am getting worried that I still have not been called for the interview! So far they have just asked me to send them my college transcripts along with a few forms.

I hope to hear something in the next week :panic:

Good news! I received an email yesterday telling me that I will be contacted for an interview in the next couple weeks and I was given the interview location. That will be before the July PEPC I was offered, but not before the June PEPC. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I'll let anyone who is keeping tabs know what happens next, and more importantly, when everything happens.:panic:

The FAA person said they will contact me within a few weeks. I hope, I got an email about a month ago saying I'll be contacted about doing an interview at ZMP about six weeks ago. Nobody ever contacted me so I replied and turns out the person working my file left the position and the FAA deleted her email and so on and they lost it. turns out it was a good thing I called. I was told it happened to a bunch of people.
I also asked her if they knew what facility I was headed for if selected and she said they didn't have one yet and it depended on the interview. That made me feel better cause I was under the impression I was to goto ZMP and I don't really know if I want to work en-route. Some people I know that worked with me in the military are at centers and they all told me they miss the terminal environment. So hopefully I will be able to get put into MSP Tracon or a tower in the Minneapolis area.

I'm jealous. I'd love to get stationed somewhere in Minnesota, but alas, it looks like if I get the job I'm heading out to North Dakota.

I got a call for my interview. Its going to be on Tuesday.:nana2: I am anxious to find out what location in Texas they offer me, so I can start to learn about the area. I have never even been to Texas so it will be a big adjustment! The process is slow, but I am just glad that its moving along finally!

Rainshine it will be interesting to see how our time frames compare. Seeing as how I live in MN and I am heading to the LA PEPC on the 18th it should be a good comparison of PEPC versus old school route.

Are you going to be stationed in MN? Yeah, I am very curious to know how comparable the different processes are. Keep me updated:)

I am supposedly selected for SNA John Wayne Airport in beautiful Orange County California. I say supposedly because after I chose between SNA and San Fran no one can confirm where I am slated for. Technically am still on MN referral list and the most recent national referral list. I am however slated for next Wednesday at the LA PEPC which is all I am worried about. I will keep you posted :bandit:
