anyone applying for pilot positions in the guard?

turning down all those fixed wing units for an apache gig? must really love rotary! my father has 25 years in rotary in the army guard, but he told me to go air guard because they treat you better. my idea to aim for cargo is recent and was advised by a pilot who is both C-130 and Viper. he said he got 640 hours in his year w/ the hercs and averages 120 in the Viper. i know that my best chances are in-state (arkansas) and C-130s might be all thats left after BRAC.

I will take up on anyone's offers of past experience and advice, but i should probably get my packet in order before i look for some good info.

LOL yeah everybody laughs......I don’t need the hours, well let me say they wont make or break me as I already have my own business, so not sure I will ever be a commercial pilot, who knows......It isn’t that I like RW any more then FW, it is the fact I like 30MM chain guns, low level, hellfire missiles, and CAS... My first dream was A-10's, but with the BRAC I was worried many would go away. Not to mention, there was at least a 2 year wait for the Hog unit out of Battle Creek (moving to Selfridge per BRAC)

ALSO, make sure you look at other packets before you proceed with yours

none of my "friends" are really letting me look at their packet. i guess its the competition of it. it doesn't matter because my unit just hired two people off the street this summer. i could go blackhawks right now if i wanted to w/ my dad, but its not my desire. he said i could eventually transfer to a King Air (C-12?) unit in Springfield, MO, but that is a very roundabout way to fixed wing experience and hours.

I also have a poor GPA , but if you go to wantscheck.com, you can see that even people with as low as 2.1 GPA have gotten slots.....anyway...dont count yourself out on your own...there will plenty of units doing that for you :}...you never know unless you try.

The old special ops helo unit is the AF Reserve 302nd Fighter Squadron at Luke. Now F-16s, they used to be the 302nd Special Ops Squadron with CH-3Es Jolly Green Giant helos, up until 1987.

Mike,

To be precise I think the 302nd (may have been a different number then) flew the old, very old, SA-16. Was an air rescue unit back then.

When I first went to the Reserves in KC135's back in 1978 the commander of our unit at Grissom had been in that unit at Luke and I seem to remember him talking of the SA16.
