Anybody Use an Orthopedic Seat Cushion?

ZapBrannigan

If it ain’t a Boeing, I’m not going. No choice.
Cockpit seats aren't great. They get beat all to heck and as I get older I notice some back pain (not to mention butt pain) when i'm in there for more than a few hours. I was thinking something made of memory foam might help.

Does anyone use an orthopedic seat cushion that they would recommend? Something portable and easy to carry from airplane to airplane? Hopefully discrete?

Thanks in advance

I have a memory foam cushion that I got at a relax the back store for $25.

There was also a lumbar support that could velcro to it for another $15

I usually just leave it in the car, but for flights over 2 hours it is a godsend.

I used a Homedics lumbar cushion while flying in Iraq, long missions..life saver! Its was pretty cheap online, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GB06RA

Seats in the LJ45 suck. One of the guys here uses a cushion, but I can't remember the source right off. I'll post it later.

The best thing that I found is to raise the seat as high as you can stand it to be. It puts your noggin up against (or close to) the overhead, but it adds more support under your thighs. Do that, and move the rudders forward out of the way during cruise and the 45 seats are almost bearable for a while.

Our Skool of Flite has a bunch of cushions for those who are more vertically challenged, and for the ridiculously poorly designed seats in the DA42. The manufacturer is Oregon Aero, as I recall. I think they even have a piece of lumbar support that zips to the seat cushion.
*Edit* Here is the product http://oregonaero.com/p24_2001.htm

I see Lear has yet to improve that aspect of their aircraft.. I'm dying on 3+ hr flights in our 35s.

I used a Nelson booster seat in the Warrior & Archer.... :D

But that's a whole different subject!

Ya, see the older captains carry those around them. But it just looks like a PITA to carry with you on a 4 day trip with lots of plane swaps.

Yeah, I imagine it would be...though I guess Zap doesn't do a lot of running through terminals between airplanes....

:nana2: Not anymore! :nana2: Yeah baby! :nana2:

The Oregon Aero cushion is $153. There aren't any on Ebay. If anyone knows where I can pick one up a little cheaper, please let me know.

I never thought about it in the 55...they were pretty comfortable. But now in the Hawker, with the same seats it came with 40 years go, I'm starting to look. I forgot all about Oregon Aero, but I'll start there.

Highly recomend Oregon Aero cushions and lumbar supports. I'm sitting on one right now at the computer chair, my sister uses a combo in her new car to cure her "unsittable" drivers seat. I talked the C141 ANG wing I used to be at into outfitting their seats with OA product, every crewmember I talked to raved about the improvement in long term comfort.

Know any place we can get them a bit cheaper? I'm having a bit of sticker shock from the Oregon Aero website.

Also, has anyone used the 1/2 inch base vs. the 1 inch? I'd like something a little more slim, but not at the expense of performance

Here's the response I got back from Oregon Aero:

Thank you very much for your interest in our Portable Universal SoftSeat™ Cushions. You have a very good question. You will find nearly the same level of support and comfort when using the ½” version compared to the 1” in a Lear. If you were to use the ½” on a hard fiberglass seat pan, you will be better off using the 1” version.

I still haven't found them any cheaper. Anybody have one they want to sell?

Wow! Wal-Mart really DOES crave low prices from the suppliers!

Just kidding Zap!

Seriously, it would probably be money well spent.
