Anybody encountered this limitation in the POH?

From my CFI Renewal..

Oil Specifications and Quantity for VFR and IFR Flight is a limitation that imposes the oil quantity for VFR and IFR flights and is different from the minimum engine oil requirement. If the aircraft has this limitation, IFR flight typically requires a greater oil quantity.

I have never seen this.

Anybody?

Yep, DA40 requires more oil for IFR flight than VFR flight. 6 and 5 Quarts respectively, I think. Nice to know they don't really care if the engine burns up as long as I'm VFR...

Thanks for the reply. I wonder why that is. Could it really be, "let's be extra sure we don't burn up the engine?"

hmmmm

Could be like VFR vs IFR fuel reserves, depending on what an acceptable oil burn is. All internal combustion 4 strokes use a measurable amount of oil, some just use more than others. Maybe the engine in that airframe is allowed to use 1 qt per hour, which after a long flight IFR could leave the engine low on oil?

DA40 is the only one I've ever seen, but my experience is somewhat limited. 6 for IFR, 4 for VFR. I wonder which you should use for IFR in VMC?

sssshhhhhh! Somebody will realize its an oversight and write a FAR for that scenario.

That is the most retarded thing I've ever heard of in my life.

So if you depart VMC under IFR, can you get away with only having 5 quarts?

I thought I remembered that from my CFI days but I didn't want to sound like a idiot if it wasn't. Its 4 for VFR and 6 for IFR

The IFR limitations, because you're still operating under instrument flight rules, even if it is clear and a million. Compare and contrast flight rules with instrument meteorological conditions, which is a whole 'nother animal.

(We had this argument at work the other day; an MEL item that you can't fly IFR without...doesn't matter what the weather is, you can't file and execute an IFR flight plan.)

Nope, see above.
