Anybody else get airsick on their first flight lesson?

I was also one of those persons that used the simulator too much before I flew my first time, and it only took one short flight for me to become terrified of flying, I could not fly, mostle because I was embarassed that I might puke all over someone, it got so bad that I started getting airsick out of no where, on commercial flights, when I non-rev, and sometimes even on my car.

That's when I figured out that it wasnt a problem with my stomach, or a problem with flying, It was more of a mental thing. If you think that your going to get sick, you will.

I got over it by pushing myself to fly, I flew Midwest between MKE-DCA, MKE-LGA over 15 times in two weeks, and continued flying untill it got better. Another thing that helped was the seaband, they sell them at wallgreens for 10 dollars. I dont think they really help, but It just makes you feel a little more confortable just to have them on, It was sort of like reassurance,

Good Luck, if you have any questions PM me!

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys .. next time I won't eat a heavy, spicy meal before the flight. I can just imagine how it would have smelled regurgitated all over the yoke ;)

It also helps to not think about it before you fly. I was so freaked out about stalls from the other students that I was dwelling on it like crazy and after the first one I think I made myself sick. Also watch what you eat before you fly, you should keep it light.

I too was concerned that I would not be able to fly due to the nausea I experienced during my first several lessons. I was advised to eat prior to my lessons, so began by eating a half a sandwich before the flight, sometimes I would eat the other half if I began to feel bad during the flight and that would help as well (my personal anecdotal experience). I also made sure that the fresh air vents were aimed toward my face, and looked at the horizon outside when I began to feel sick. This seemed to help me alot. By the second week of training airsickness became a non-issue.

I got queezy during my first instrument flight a few weeks ago. It was windy and I couldn't go up in my regular plane due to crosswind constraints. I never blew chunks... but, I was sick for a few hours.

I just went up again in smoother air under the hood and felt fine.

Good luck,
Rob

Save that for your first instrument training flight:).

Just like everyone says, you will grow out of it. Some of us don't get sick ever, some do. Your body builds up to it, and its no different than exercising. At first you may have trouble running that mile, but eventually your body simply gets used to it, and you don't even notice that you've been flying.

Give it time... and by all means keep at it:D. Have fun!

Hey,

The title says it all. I didn't blow chunks all over the instruments, but came close a few times. Something about the world tilting back and forth really messed up my body. It's a major drag, because I was really excited going through the checklists on the ground, but once we climbed a few thousand feet and started doing some climbs, turns & descents .. bam! Hell, it's 3 hours later and I still have a headache.

The instructor says I'll get over it. Who knows .. anybody else experience this crap??

As a sidenote, I was surprised at how easy it is to get fixated on instruments. Coming from flight simulators, I was totally focused on pegging my VSI at 0 and locking my artificial horizon at 30 deg for that perfect bank .. well, it turns out its a lot easier to just look out the damn window!

yes, i was sick for my first 5-6 lessons. you'll get over it.
