Any NY Tracon controllers on here?

center controllers wont be able to answer questions regarding runway assignments, neither would tracon controllers. maybe tower controllers....post your question please

My questions are:

1) How do they determine runway assignments? I know it can't be just JFK/LGA/EWR tower controllers only. Flow has to have something to do with it, doesn't it? The reason why I'm asking is yesterday the winds were 040/11 and JFK was landing 31L&R. Not a problem but I was just wondering why the 31s?

2) This is mainly for JFK. Why when landing on the 22's and you are coming in on the Lendy or Kingston arrivals why do we have to fly all the way down to central NJ just to come back on the downwind to the northern tip of LI to shoot the approach. Why not just come over LGA and the northern part of LI? I know this might sound weird, but I'm not the only pilot thinking this.

P.S. If you haven't flown or dealt with the NY Approach this might look really crazy. Hands down best controllers in the US are NY tracon. If you can't take sarcasm don't fly in NYC.

Sarcasm?
All I can contribute is this, but we've all probably seen it. Still... It's classic.

Well, I was in JFK in a Mooney yesterday and we landed on 4R. They were landing on 4R and departing on 4L and 31L at KK. Shortly afterwards they changed to an all 31 operation (depart 31L at either the full length or KK and arrive on 31R). I believe they were just simplifying things up in the tower (i.e. instead of two guys working 119.1 and 123.9 they had one guy on both 119.1 and 123.9).

They must like the crosswinds because the winds were 330@18 when we landed in the morning...

No, I don't work in ATC nor JFK tower....just for the record.

It's like that everyday in JFK... From what I can tell everything is dependant on what LGA is doing or vice versa. That airspace is tight.

I dont work there to start with. Ry configurations are not all about the winds. The NY area is congested to say the least and the proximity of JFK/LGA/EWR add to the complexity. That being said I would venture to say it is a coordinated effort and colaborative to move as much metal to all three. Configure one way at LGA may dictate JFK or EWR configuration and vice-versa. Noise abatement may be a factor.Whether its an arrival or departure rush can determine the configuration. WX besides wind has to be considered.

This is a generic answer but I stress its a complicated scenario and winds are only one factor of many.
