Anxiety and ADD

Hello

This year, going back to school, I started feeling very sick in my stomach and couldn't eat at all from anxiety. I went to the doctor and he prescribed Lexapro for irritable bowel syndrome. I was wondering if this puts limits on Air Force or Navy pilots.

I was also wondering if ADD puts limits on pilots. I'm not sure if I have ADD, but I do have problems concentrating sometimes.

Thanks

The Lexapro would be DSQ for FAA purposes. I have not been on active duty in 20 years so I do not know the current military stance. In the past, it would have been DQ. Maybe one of the military piltos on the board has the answer.

Wow...

Can I ask why? I've never had any side-effects of Lexapro, and I am totally how I used to be before the iritibal bowel syndrome diagnosis.

Remember, Dr. Forred does not make the rules.

You can go through a "special issuance" process in order to qualify for a medical. I'd suggest a refocus on that angle rather than spending energy wondering why.

And/or some people just don't qualify. For whatever reason.

There's a lot of things you can lose a medical for, if I were you I'd really be looking into the process of getting one in your situation.

Wow... No offense to your work but that seems pretty stupid to me.

:wtf?:

Yeah, seriously? We want someone who needs anti-depressants to make it through life flying a hurtling piece of aluminum through the sky thinking about ending it all. And to top it off, give him amphetamines for his inability to concentrate!

I'm not being mean here, but really, the logic in your reply is nonexistent.

EEHHH give the guy/gal a break. Being told you cant pursue something you have wanted to for a long time or something you love is quite hard or in some cases heart breaking. We arent all astronauts.

To the OP, I was told I couldnt fly for certain reasons. In the end I went through the process of deferral with the FAA and came out with a 100% clean 1st class medical and have not had any problems renewing it either. do some research and talk to the FAA. ITs a pain in the ass but it pays off if you get what you want.

Remember this saying though,

"Weren't not happy until your not happy!" Sincerely, the FAA

I agree with ahsmatt7.

But please don't talk to just "the FAA." The FSDO knows crap. Talk to your AME or go to the medical certification source at the FAA.

I once relied on the medical advice of a FAA FSDO guy and as a result, it put my life in aviation on hold for 10 years. I was a 17 year old private pilot, and I thought "Well, he's from the FAA, he must know." And he was wrong about my situation.

I second that. Thanks for adding that.:)

There is a good website called www.leftseat.org or something like that. I wouldnt use their services becasue you dont seem like you are time restricted. However call them to get a free evaluation and they are very knowledgable.

Also read the multiple threads on here about ADHD and anxiety medications. We have need covering this for at least the last 4 years.

Sure sounds like you are. Maybe work on that? Happy new year!

Yeah my bad, I read it a few hours later and it did seem harsh without helping at all.

But in all seriousness, I had similar type questions once upon a time so I called my local AME and he was nice enough to talk to me on the phone for a good 10 minutes or so answering all of my questions about DQ'ing medications. Try doing that and you'll come away with some good answers.
