Antidepressants

Dr. Forred,

Have you heard anything new on the possible approval of antidepressants? It's been in the pipeline for a while. What do you think the possible reasons are for the FAA's reluctance to move forward on this issue? Canada and Australia have taken a more relaxed position.

Thanks for the service you provide.

It is supposed to be announced this summer. I hear they will be approving only 3 of the antidepressants (I don't know which ones yet) and there will be some strict criteria for the Special Issuance. As soon as they release the info, I will post it here.

I just happened to see this thread.

One of my brother-in-law's friends is a private pilot, and is taking wellbutrin? to quit smoking, not for depression. Is that still a grounding item?

Thanks Doc!

Thanks for the uber-quick reply doc.

Are there any hoops he'll need to go through to get to fly again? (I ask only because I'll see him in the next week or two).

Much appreciated.

Any word on this yet, doc? I just started getting panic attacks this summer, and I'm worried that my PCM will soon suggest that I start taking something for them. :(

Wow, I've been doing some research on this, and it seems that they've been 'trying' to make some kind of a decision about this since like 2006 or so. Are they keeping it on the backburner on purpose? Just don't see it of utter importance, or what?

Also, I've read lots of the old threads on here regarding the same issue, and "something" is always supposed to be announced this spring, fall, winter, whenever. :p Do you know if they are serious about coming out with some kind of definite answer this year, doc?

My sources at the FAA tell me it is getting closer and the criteria are to be announced this year. It sounds like it will be fairly stringent and there will be a few hoops to jump through. As soon as the announcement is made, we will post the info here.

Are antidepressants the only psychotropic meds approved or are they gonna be approving other psychotropic meds as well? Just wondering.

GEEZZ!! No updates yet?? I'mma have to call The FAA myself and find out WTH is going on and why they're taking so damn long. Hurry up already!

Obviously you know nothing about the government system. You tell them to hurry up and all they do is slow down another notch. Plus don't be surprised when or if they do approve it, expect a lot of paper work and waiting for clearance.

I think what I'm going to do since the thread it taking a life of it's own beyond the scope of the question, AND considering the good doctor and nurse are busy people, I'm going to scup the thread a little and move bits to the lavatory.

Here's the other thread.
